Artist of the Week: Youth Lagoon

Monday 14 May 2012

Trevor Powers is an unassuming character, a baby face framed by dark ringlets and a flip cap just in case you weren’t aware of how blatantly young he is.  Home -recorded indie pop is much the same; its charm often buried in reverb and drifts in and away as quick as the smoky haze it was intended to be played in.  The two together under the moniker of Youth Lagoon however, are a mesmerising combination.

The debut album "Year Of Hibernation" put Youth Lagoon on the radar with delicate tracks awash with nostalgia that build from whispered vocals into epic pulsating choruses. The album’s lo-fi crackle and hum make it sound like a well-loved vinyl that you’ve had on repeat for years and its warmth and themes of youth and adventure make it just as familiar.

Accompanied by only a keyboard and a guitarist on stage when performing live, Power’s usually hushed vocals are put on show.  With so little standing between him and the audience, Youth Lagoon remains just as intimate and personal on stage as he is in his bedroom.

Youth Lagoon’s Splendour In The Grass sideshows will be his last performances for 2012 so don’t miss out!

Artist of the Week: Electric Guest

Monday 7 May 2012

ELECTRIC GUEST

Budding musician moves to L.A in hope of hitting the big time where he meets equally talented muso in an overcrowdedcrack-den-chic share house and forms a band.  It’s a story we have all heard before so, what makes Asa Taccone and Michael Compton of Electric Guest a Rolling Stones buzz band and not just another pair of hopefuls scraping by as wedding singers? Somewhere between along the way lead singer Asa had the great fortune of being introduced to a Mr Burton – his mother calls him Brian but you may know him as Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley, Broken Bells, Rome and producer of The Black Keys, Gorillaz, U2, Beck and others).  More importantly Danger Mouse loved what Electric Guest had to offer and suggested they make an album.

The debut effort “Mondo” is a nostalgic blend 70’s funk and Motown cool with a twist of indie pop electronics that allows the album to be retro while sounding completely fresh and new.  The single ‘This Head I Hold’ and its entertaining video clearly dictate Electric Guest’s intentions – to make you dance!  Whether it’s fast paced hip swinging to ‘Waves’, some shoulder sliding groove action with ‘Awake’ or slowing it down to a thoughtful sway for the beat laden ‘American Daydream,’ this album will have you moving from start to finish.

If you came to dance and think you can keep up we recommend highlighting Electric Guest on your Splendour timetable or catch them at one of their sideshows in Sydney or Melbourne.
