Splendour Survey Winners

Thank you to the thousands upon thousands of you who took part in our recent online survey and entered the associated competition to win tickets to next year's Splendour in the Grass. In the words of the professional researcher who framed the survey and who has done lots of them before, "it's a response other organisations dream about". A big thank you to all participants.

After an exhaustive review of all of the entries, we have whittled it down to the 12 people whose submissions have won a double pass to next year's festival.

The winners, who have already been contacted directly, (in no particular order) are: Blair Ahern (QLD), Rose O'Doherty (WA), Sarah Hyne (QLD), Liberty Lawson (NSW), Adam Stratton (QLD), Kate Anderson (ACT), Mick Webb (VIC), Elly Squire (WA), Madeleine Dunne (SA), David J. Young (VIC), Eliza Otte (VIC), Helen Logothetis (QLD).

We received a plethora of great comments, and while some of them touch on subjects that were common to many entries, the winners put it in a distinctive and unique way that appealed to our panel of judges (aka those of us in the Byron Bay office). We'll probably end up posting the winners' comments up on our Facebook page so keep an eye out.

Thanks again to all who took part.

---------

Don't miss the opportunity to get out and feast on the huge buffet of musical offerings this Summer. You can find more info on all Secret Sounds Tours by visiting www.secret-sounds.com.au

---------

Look out in the new year for all of the news regarding Splendour In the Grass 2012.

All the best for the festive season.

Cheers,
Splendour's Little Helpers

My Car's A Unicorn, What's Yours?… WINNERS

After a lot of deliberation we have come to our final decisions and are ready to announce the winners of the 'My Car's A Unicorn, What's Yours?…' competition.

We saw a great bunch of dressed-up cars roll in through the Splendour In The Grass gates. There were mythical creatures, extinct creatures, wide interpretations of the theme and, if one looked hard enough, you might have found Wally in amongst it all.

There are 4 daily award winners and 1 "People's Choice Award", but because one entry in the latter public voting category managed to whip up a veritable congregation of votes we have re-named that award the "Nun's Own Choice Award", and have added in one more award – the "Splendour's Choice Award" - for the entry that the Splendour office liked the most.

Each of the winning cars' occupants will receive an Event - Camping Ticket to Splendour In the Grass 2012 (*subject to verification of occupants through cross-referencing with Moshtix ticket scanning records).

And, without further ado, here are the winners!!!

Splendour's Choice: My Car's Where's Wally
What a pity we don't have aerial shots this year – we would've loved to have tried picking Wally out in the crowd.

Wednesday 27th July award: Splendour-Saurus
Lots of effort went into this. Extra points for being a landmark for campers to get their bearings in the campground.

Thursday 28th July award: My Car's A Green Tree Frog
Simple but effective and very cute with a nice underlying enviro message. Jury is out as to whether it would've won if it was a cane toad.

Friday 29th July award: My Car's A Lolly Tree
Yes, all 8 occupants of this Tarago get a ticket for next year. Congratulations on a great car-pooling and artwork creation effort!!

Saturday 30th July award: My Car's A Dragon
So we want to know if the 'dragon scales' artwork is permanent or just done for Splendour?

"Nun's Own Choice" aka People's Choice: My Car's A Nun Mobile
You've won the public vote. Now, get thee to a confessional…

Highly Commended: My Car's A Crossword.
This entry receives a consolation prize; winner will be advised of their prize direct from the Splendour office.

Unfortunately, photos of two great participants did not make it onto the voting page in time but we have decided to reward them anyway for their excellent efforts. Consolation prizes will also go to My Car's A Candy Ambulance and My Car's A Pirate Ship. Splendour will be in touch regarding prizes.
WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW TO KEEP MUSIC ALIVE IN THE BYRON SHIRE!

Submissions close Thurdsay 18th August

We urgently need you to help us keep music alive in our home of Byron Shire. The local council is trying to force an LEP amendment which would limit major music events over 6000 patrons and over two days' duration to only two a year.

The effect of this amendment would be to not only place North Byron Parklands (Splendour’s intended permanent home) at risk, it would also stifle the local music scene and creative industries as well as hampering economic activity and innovation in the Byron Shire. And it sends a message that Byron does not support music events. Which is just not true.

Council have already consulted the public about limiting major music events. Last year they had a six week public exhibition period for their Draft Events Policy, which placed severe limitations on events.

The majority of public submissions objected to this draft policy. Council also received a petition with 2054 signatures against the Draft Events Policy, stating:

“We, the undersigned, petition the Mayor and Councillors of Byron Shire Council to:
Amend your Draft Events Policy to allow for large events outside Byron township over the summer period, to allow for more than two large events annually and to also abolish the 16,500 cap on event capacity. Please consider our creative future. “

Even Council's own planning staff recommended against the policy.

Yet Byron Shire Council's report to State Government omitted the fact that the majority of public submissions opposed their policy. They further omitted the fact that their own planning staff opposed it.

Now they are trying to further limit events, specifically large music events, through another method, the LEP. They didn’t listen to the feedback from last year.

Please take a moment to send an email objecting to the LEP amendment. Submissions are due by 4:00pm on Thursday 18th August. It only takes a sec, we promise. Click here…

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2011 WRAP UP. IT WAS A MONSTER!

Splendour In The Grass festival wrapped up at Woodfordia last night after three glorious sundrenched days of music, arts, discussion and sweet times shared with old and new friends.

Splendour took the music to the people for the 11th time, with the 30,000 strong crowd taking in over 90 of the hottest acts that Australia and the world has to offer.

Friday night headliner Kanye West took Splendour’s Ampitheatre crowd to “a whole other level” with a monster set that ran for 90 minutes and included over 20 ballet dancers, pyrotechnics and an absolute killer performance by the man himself.

With one of the hottest tracks of the moment Gotye delighted the GW McLennan audience when he invited Kimbra on stage to perform “Somebody That I Used To Know” during his set.

On Saturday The Mars Volta, Foster The People and Pnau were the talk of the festival for their commanding sets and huge audiences.

Sunday highlights included Kaiser Chiefs, Devendra Banhart and Pulp. Coldplay then closed Splendour with one monumental sing a long as they pumped out hit after hit to a packed Ampitheatre crowd.

In addition to the mammoth music line-up, Splendour In The Grass 2011 offered punters a diversity of festival distractions. On Friday The Splendour Forum hosted the much talked about panel “Big Brother V Little Brother” with a dedicated video message from Julian Assange.

“This generation is burning the mass media to the ground. We’re reclaiming our rights to old history. We are ripping open secret archives from Washington to Cairo. We are reclaiming our rights to share ourselves and our times with each other, to be the agents and writers of our own history. We don’t know yet exactly where we are but we can see where we’re going.”

Other destination spaces such as the Tipi Forest, Global Village, Very Small Mall, Splendour Day Spa, Smirnoff Cocktail Bar, La Cantina Mexicana and the Jager Hunting Lodge offered Splendour goers a range of places to explore.

The new car pass system worked a treat and punters entered and excited the site with relative ease.

With Queensland’s largest provider of first aid services, Emergency First Aid Services, on board to provide around the clock care for patrons, Stephen Barnes (Emergency First Aid Services Representative) said, “I would like to commend the crowd on their responsible approach to footwear, sunscreen and hydration which overall resulted in a 50% reduction in presentations. You looked after yourselves and each other. Good work!”

Most treatments were for minor complaints. A team of doctors, registered nurses and paramedics were on hand to care for a number of medical conditions that presented throughout the weekend, and Emergency First Aid Services liaised with the Ambulance Service of QLD for patients who required further medical treatment.

Co-producer Jessica Ducrou said “This year we put together one of the most adventurous, diverse and controversial line-ups of Splendour’s history. Thanks to all of you who came along and enjoyed it with us! See you next year!”

We'll be back shortly with photos and a few more little surprises.

Some days I would try to climb up to the lighthouse. Earth would overhang the sea cliffs and sometimes a pebble would shift or a gull would cry and I would wonder if I was standing on the overhang.

Later I would look back and see that in fact there had been nothing between me and the waters below. At any given moment I could not see where I was, I could only see where I had been and where I wanted to go. Only with perspective could I understand.

We are all like that. We all laugh at the dorky fashions from ten years ago but we think we are totally cool now. Well we are, but in a more important way. We are becoming the agents of perspective.

This generation is burning the mass media to the ground. We’re reclaiming our rights to old history. We are ripping open secret archives from Washington to Cairo. We are reclaiming our rights to share ourselves and our times with each other, to be the agents and writers of our own history. We don’t know yet exactly where we are but we can see where we’re going.

The change in perspective that has happened over the last year is what this generation is going to use to find our lighthouse and when we get there we’re going to turn the fucking spotlight on.

So enjoy Splendour In The Grass. Find each other. Find every perspective you can. You’ll need it in the adventure ahead."

TRAFFIC LATEST

Tomorrow is going to be the day when most of our campers arrive at Woodfordia, so with lots of traffic heading our way we thought we’d tell you how to get updates on road conditions.

The Queensland Transport Info Line 131 940 will have updated traffic reports dedicated to the festival area, and will carry similar information on their web site.

For Event info: qld.gov.au/Regions/NorthCoast/Road-Conditions

On Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, this website and the 131 940 traffic report line will be updated often with Traffic Information for Splendour. The updated information can be viewed at:
qld.gov.au/Regions/NorthCoas

You can also tune into triple j radio to hear listener’s road trip reports .

Please drive carefully. The D’Aguilar Highway is a ‘black spot’ road with a number of high accident zones.

EXTRA ENTRY/EXIT THIS YEAR

As you approach Woodfordia, there is a chance that traffic police will direct you to a new, second ENTRY at the western end of the property.

This entry will be used for camper arrivals at times of congestion on approach roads over the next few days. Police will be on point duty at the Kilcoy-Beerwah Road / D’aguilar Highway intersection and you may be directed to proceed further west to the Pratt Rd entry where your tickets and vehicle pass will be processed and you will be able to enter the campground.

Please follow signage and the directions of police and traffic control staff.

The Pratt Road gate will also be used as an exit from Sunday evening, as will an exit from the northern campground. The main Woodrow Road exit – via the main carpark – will have restrictions on camper vehicles exiting between 10.30pm and 1.30am on Sunday night as priority has to be given to clearing Day Parking vehicles from the carpark and also allowing the free movement of buses and passengers from the bus ‘station’ which is also located in this area. Campers should consult with their Camp Marshal if they need to exit the site on Sunday.

Expect delays on Monday morning if you try to leave at the same time as everyone else. Use commonsense when planning your departure, and allow plenty of time if you have a flight to catch or need to be back at work.

This year the site is open until 5pm, with some entertainment on offer on the Temple Stage and various food outlets and market stalls open as well. Hang around and have a cruisey day while everyone else packs up and leaves.

NO MOVEMENT OF CAMPERS’ VEHICLES

Event-camping patrons driving into the site should be aware that once your vehicle is parked at your campsite it cannot be moved again until the end of the festival. Last year, the movement of vehicles in and out of Woodfordia added to the congestion on locals roads and we have banned such movements this year to avoid such problems. A shuttle bus to town will be available if you need to get supplies.

PARKING & VEHICLE PASSES

All patron vehicles travelling to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS this year need to carry a Vehicle Entry Pass. This requirement has been publicized widely since April and is listed in the terms and conditions on your ticket, so any vehicles arriving on site without a pass will need to buy one at the PENALTY PRICE of $40.

Day Parking Passes can still be purchased from moshtix.com.au for $30 (inclusive of fees) but the online sale of Campground Vehicle Entry Passes closed at 5pm on Tuesday 26 July.

Campers who need to buy a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass on site will NOT be eligible for the $30 refund that applies to other Event-Camping Ticketholders with the proper car pass who arrive with 3 or more occupants in a vehicle.

Please be patient with our staff while you wait to purchase your car pass.

Campers who arrive with less than 3 people in their vehicle and thus forfeit their refund can rest assured that the money will go to a good cause. Half the remaining funds will go to The Australian Red Cross to assist with national and international recovery efforts for recent natural disasters. The other half will benefit the people most inconvenienced by our traffic, the Woodford community, specifically the Woodford State School P&C.

COLLECTING DAY PARKING PASSES ON SITE

If you purchased a Day Parking pass via Moshtix after Monday 19th July then you missed the postal cut-off and will need to collect your sticker on site. Please enter via Gate 3 and follow the directions of staff. The car pass purchaser will need to show ID to collect the pass. Please be patient while we issue your pass.

Those who purchased their Day Parking pass on or before Monday 18th July should have received their pass via registered post. The recipient needed to sign for the article upon delivery or upon collection from your post office or agency.

It's starting to look a lot like SplendouR

We'd like to share some photos of the site build with you. There are some places and spaces you might recognize if you were here last year, and then there are some that are new to the scene. One welcome return from our Byron days is the two-storey Smirnoff cocktail bar, which this year will make its Woodfordia debut in a beautiful position under the majestic hoop pines overlooking the central pond. If you don't recognize some of the other locations in the pix, then you're just going to have to discover them for yourself in a few days.

The Woodfordia team have done a great job of repairing the site after the damage sustained during the dreadful Queensland floods in January. In fact some of the walkways and roads inside the event area are in even better shape than they were last year. The Amphitheatre looks amazing and everything is green, green, green.

Please go to the SPLENDOUR online gallery to see these pix and more, including some great aerial shots of last year's festival as well as a selection of the photos contributed to our Pic Me competition.

We also have loads of photos from On the Bright Side in Perth on Saturday. Check out this amazing shot of Patience from the Grates in mid-flight. Mark of the year contender for sure!! This will delay your entry into the festival. Please purchase your car pass before 5pm tomorrow to make things easier for all of us. Car pass details here splendourinthegrass.com and go here to buy moshtix.com.au

Please note that the option to put tickets back into the resale closed at 5pm today (Monday 25 July). Anyone with tickets in the resale should be aware that at this stage it is unlikely those tickets will find a buyer, so another option is to reissue your ticket to someone else. Details of how to reissue your ticket can be found here splendourinthegrass.com

Any tickets remaining unsold after 5pm Tuesday 26th July are deemed to be the property of the original purchaser and remain valid for use at the festival. In this instance, the resale fees paid will be refunded to the credit card used to pay this service charge.

Here's the rundown:
RESELL OPTION - ENDS MONDAY July 25 5pm
ONLINE TICKET SALES/REISSUES & CAR PASS SALES - END TUESDAY July 26 5pm

REGARDING RESALES AND REISSUES

We realise that each year many people work hard and save hard to buy tickets to Splendour.

Three years ago we introduced a ticket resale facility to give ticket-holders who could not attend Splendour an opportunity to resell their tickets subject to demand and in a way that avoided the price of tickets being inflated by scalpers.

This year tickets to Splendour have not sold out and tickets registered for sale on the resale facility have been languishing, unwanted at full price.
In response we introduced a reissue option to allow ticket-holders to sell tickets privately for an achievable price – so that the purchase price paid by any ticket-holder unable to attend Splendour need not be entirely wasted. As always, any ticket-holder who has registered a ticket for sale using our resale facility may withdraw their ticket from that facility if they wish.

We regret that the lower demand for tickets this year means that ticket-holders who are unable to attend Splendour may be unable to recover their full ticket price. We hope and trust that those disappointed ticket-holders will appreciate that by relaxing our entitlement to demand that tickets are not transferred we have ensured that the money they have spent on their tickets need not be entirely wasted.

BUS NEWS, CAR PASS NOTICE & TICKETS UPDATE

The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round – we’re happy to report that the bus network servicing Splendour In the Grass is now complete.

Details of all services can be found here splendourinthegrass.com Various bus companies will convey patrons to and from the festival. The Caboolture buses will operate from Caboolture Railway Station, enabling patrons to utilise a train/bus option to travel to the festival.

There will also be a Woodford town shuttle for those wanting to make a quick trip to town and back.

CAR PASS REMINDER

If you’re driving a vehicle to the festival, remember that the sale of Vehicle Entry Pass via moshtix.com.au will close on Tuesday at 5pm in readiness for our first arrivals on Wednesday. All patron vehicles travelling to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS this year need to purchase a Vehicle Entry Pass. Those who don’t will pay a penalty fee if they arrive on site without one.

We have set a daily quota of passes as a way of controlling the amount of traffic on roads leading to the site.

There are two types of pass, each costing $30 (inclusive of fees) if you buy in advance of Tuesday:

Event-Camping ticketholders need to buy one Campground Vehicle Entry Pass for their vehicle for the day they intend to arrive. Campers can choose between passes that entitle them to arrive on either Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th, Friday 29th or even Saturday 30th. These passes are fully refundable if the vehicle is carrying 3 or more passengers (with valid Splendour tickets).

Day patrons intending to drive to the festival will need one Day Parking Pass per vehicle that covers carpark access at Woodfordia for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These passes are not refundable, irrespective of the number of passengers.

Campers who arrive with less than 3 people in their vehicle and thus forfeit their refund can rest assured knowing that the money will go to a good cause. Half the remaining funds will go to The Australian Red Cross to assist with national and international recovery efforts for the numerous recent natural disasters. The other half will benefit the people most inconvenienced by our traffic, the Woodford community, specifically the Woodford State School P&C.

COLLECTING DAY PARKING PASSES ON SITE

If you purchased a Day Parking pass via Moshtix on or after Tuesday 19th July then you missed the postal cut-off and will need to collect your sticker on site.

NO CAR PASS PENALTY RATE

We’ve been talking for months now about the requirement for Vehicle Entry Passes and have publicized it widely (including in the Terms & Conditions on your ticket), so any vehicles arriving on site without a pass will need to buy one at the PENALTY PRICE of $40.

Campers buying these passes on site will NOT be eligible for a refund irrespective of the number of passengers in their vehicle. Further, if you arrive without a car pass it’s going to take a while for you to get into the festival, as we’ll need to ask you to wait while you purchase the car pass, which may take some time depending upon how many others are doing the same. It will then be at the discretion of our traffic staff as to when your vehicle is able to re-enter the flow of traffic into the campground or carpark.

Or you could just buy a Vehicle Entry pass before 5pm Tuesday and avoid the hassle.

ALL ONLINE TICKET AND CAR PASS SALES END TUESDAY

Please note that the option to put tickets back into the resale closes 5pm MONDAY 25 July, however with demand lower this year than in the past there are already many tickets in the resale awaiting purchase by another person. It is unlikely all of those tickets will find a buyer, so another option is to reissue your ticket to another person.

Online car pass sales also close at 5pm Tuesday.

Here’s the rundown:
RESELL OPTION ENDS MONDAY July 25 5pm
REISSUES END TUESDAY July 26 5pm
ONLINE TICKET & CAR PASS SALES END TUESDAY July 26 5pm

INFO FOR CAMPERS

It’s under a week until we welcome our first on-site campers to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2011 and we have some information to help you prepare for your time at your Woodfordia home away from home.

The campground opens from 7am on Wednesday and remains open until 5pm Monday. Campers arriving by private vehicle will need to pre-purchase a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass for the day of their arrival – car pass online sales close on Tuesday 26th July.

Campers can arrive when they wish on the day shown on their vehicle pass, although we’d rather you didn’t arrive between 10pm and 7am as it is disruptive to other campers and we only have limited staff on duty at those times so this may delay your entry. Campers arriving by bus can enter the campground on any day.

Once your vehicle arrives at your campsite it must remain there for the duration of your stay at the festival. Last year it was identified that camper vehicles going in and out of Woodfordia contributed significantly to traffic congestion. We also need all inbound lanes in operation to help clear traffic off roads leading to the site and will NOT have exit lanes available for vehicles wanting to leave the campground.

If you do need to go into town, there will be a Woodford shuttle bus operating for $4 per person per trip. This will be a better option than using your own vehicle to come and go from the campground.

The General Store on-site will also be open from noon Wednesday for basic supplies. This year there will also be food stalls in the campground. If you can't wait until you get inside to eat or need a cup of coffee in bed, then this will be where to head for all of the festival faves - coffee, bacon, eggs, toasted sangers and burgers. As well as filling up before bed you'll be supporting the Woodford Scouts in the north camping area and the local combined Rotary Clubs in the south camping area.

YOU ARE HERE

When you set up camp, take note of your Camp Marshall Area (A, B, C etc) and any nearby structures or features. Ask your Camp Marshall to show you exactly where you’re located on the plan you receive upon arrival - once it’s dark it could be difficult to find your tent without knowing those details. While we have a number of light towers throughout the campgrounds, it is not possible to light every lane and roadway.

There will be a Patron Safety Hotline that you can call regarding safety, medical or security matters. This number will be on display around the site. There is also a downloadable map of the campground available at www.splendourinthegrass.com

All valuables should be kept out of sight inside a locked vehicle or hire a Lockerbox. We take no responsibility for lost or stolen goods.

EXTRA EXIT THIS YEAR

For departures, this year we have a second exit at the western end of the property. This exit will be able to be used from Sunday evening, as will an exit from the northern campground. The main Woodrow Road exit – via the main carpark – will have restrictions on camper vehicles exiting between 10.30pm and 1.30am on Sunday night as precedence has to be given to clearing Day Parking vehicles from the carpark and also allowing the free movement of buses and passengers from the bus ‘station’ which is also located in this area. Consult with your Camp Marshal if you need to exit the site on Sunday.

Expect delays on Monday morning if you try to leave at the same time as everyone else. The peak time is around 8.30-10.30am. This year the site is open until 5pm, with some entertainment on offer on the Temple Stage and various food outlets and market stalls open as well.

Use your commonsense when planning your departure, and allow plenty of time if you have a flight to catch or need to be back at work.

CAMPING POINTERS:

NO BYO ALCOHOL - vehicles will be searched on arrival

NO FIRES - There are communal bonfires around the campgrounds and event site (where there are also lots of mushroom heaters), so make the most of them if it gets chilly.

NO CAMPING TICKET, NO ACCESS. Only those with camping tickets/wristbands are permitted in the campground.

ARRIVE TOGETHER, SET UP TOGETHER. If you want to camp alongside friends you must arrive together. You CANNOT HOLD CAMPSITES (or car spaces) for friends.

PARK 1 CAR NEAR CAMPSITE. You can park your car next to your tent. Campsites have limited space for parking so car-pooling is recommended.

CAR CANNOT BE MOVED – camper vehicles cannot leave Woodfordia until the end of the festival. Please speak to your Camp Marshal about departure procedures.

CONSERVE SPACE. Campground space is limited so overly elaborate campsites are not permitted.

NO COUCHES or large furniture items permitted in the campgrounds.

AVOID GLASS – glass and camping don’t go together well.

BASIC SHOWER & TOILET facilities will be provided. Please keep showers brief as the water is drawn from the Woodfordia supply.

RESPECT THE SITE AND FELLOW CAMPERS. Any unruly behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in your removal from the site.

LEAVE VALUABLES AT HOME or lock them in your car. Don’t leave them in or around your tent. Report any suspicious behaviour to your area marshal, security or police.

POLICE will patrol the campground, in addition to the presence of festival staff and security personnel.

PARK SAFELY. If your vehicle is parked on a hillside, please make sure your handbrake is on and your vehicle is in gear. A block under the wheels could also be handy.

INFO FOR EVENT-ONLY TICKETHOLDERS

Please note Event-Only ticketholders wanting to attend the festival on Thursday MUST travel to the site BY BUS. The carpark will not be open for general parking on Wednesday and Thursday as the carpark is being used for on-site queuing of vehicles to help get traffic off approach roads. This measure has also been put in place as a further way to reduce traffic travelling to and from the site on the busiest day for arrivals.

Private vehicles carrying Day Parking stickers can enter the carpark from Friday 7am.

Julian Assange to address Splendour audience

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is proud to present JULIAN ASSANGE as part of a Splendour Forum discussion panel that lifts the lid on the powers struggling for control of the internet – and what they don't want you to know.

In his first-ever public address at a rock music festival, the Australian WikiLeaks editor-in-chief and winner of multiple human rights and international journalism awards will pre-record an address to the Splendour Forum audience as part of a panel on Friday July 29.

The controversial online publisher of explosive classified material, widely credited with triggering this year's "Arab Spring" uprisings, will speak directly to Splendour punters about the truth behind WikiLeaks, his arrest and what it all means for young people in Australia and around the world in a video statement to be recorded just before next week's three-day music and arts festival.

Mr Assange is currently being detained under house arrest without charge in the UK, awaiting a court's decision on a bid by Swedish authorities to question him on allegations of sexual assault.

Mr Assange's mother Christine, who will headline the panel of experts including his Australian lawyer Grace Morgan, his long-time colleague and co-author Dr Suelette Dreyfus, leading IT security analyst and podcaster Patrick Gray and ABCTV'S Hungry Beast presenters and tech-heads Marc Fennell and Nick Hayden, said powerful forces had gone to great lengths to silence her crusading son and cripple his organisation's publishing efforts.

"Splendour Forum is bringing together some of the people in Australia who are closest to Julian and who are aware of what's going on behind the scenes," Mrs Assange said.

"This is a unique opportunity to hear directly from these people the stories the mainstream media has suppressed and the things they don't want you to know.''

The panel discussion, to be moderated by The Chaser's Julian Morrow, is called “Big Brother v Little Brother: From Government and Big Business to WikiLeaks and Anonymous, Who Really Controls Our Online Secrets?" The panel takes place at midday on Friday 29 July.

Splendour Forum is Splendour In The Grass' live discussion program, held in its own tent on the festival site with seating for about 500.

The program runs 10am-4pm each day featuring a keynote address, debates, Q&A sessions, discussion panels on topics of social, cultural and political interest, interviews with artists and light-hearted literary sessions. Last year’s inaugural Forum was, as far as we know, one of the first discussion programs of its kind at a rock music festival and received critical acclaim. All of the well-attended sessions revealed a genuine appetite for dialogue and debate about contemporary issues among festival-goers.

"Splendour In The Grass is honoured to have both Julian Assange and his mother Christine Assange appear at Splendour Forum and we look forward to hearing their views on these important issues,'' said Splendour In the Grass co-promoter Jessica Ducrou.

"We acknowledge Julian's courageous efforts to champion people's right to know the truth and we support him and his mother at this critical time."

LAST DAY FOR POSTING OF PARKING STICKERS

This is a reminder that today is the last day that Day Parking vehicle passes will be posted out. You can still buy them up until next Tuesday (July 26), but Day Parking Passes bought from tomorrow will need to be collected at Woodfordia, which is going to delay your entry into the festival. If you want to use the festival carpark and want to avoid going through a collection process that may take some time, we recommend purchasing a Day Parking Pass today via www.moshtix.com.au

Those of you camping at Woodfordia will need a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass, but as they are emailed out upon purchase you have until next Tuesday (July 26) to purchase them.
IMPORTANT EVENT INFORMATION

The 2011 SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS festival is a time for fun and celebration, but there is also a serious side to any large gathering so please take the time to read the following information.

POLICE AND SECURITY

The festival is a large town in its own right, and a town needs policing. The Queensland Police Service will be working with organisers to ensure your time at the festival is safe and enjoyable. Uniformed and plain clothes officers will be on duty at all times. Drug detection dogs will be present in Woodford and at the festival. Police random breath and saliva testing units will also be active on local roads.

Two security firms will be operating on site, one overseeing the entertainment precinct and the other supervising the campground.

Anyone caught trying to fence jump or enter the venue unlawfully faces arrest. Fence jumping is trespassing and SPLENDOUR has a zero tolerance policy towards anyone trying to enter the festival this way. Offenders will be taken to the on-site Police Station for charging under the Summary Offences Act. They will then be required to go before a magistrate at a later date where they may face up to $2,000 in fines.

There will be a Patron Safety Hotline that those at the festival can call regarding safety, medical or security matters. This number will be on display around the site. There is also a printable map of the campground available here.

All valuables should be kept out of sight inside a locked vehicle or hire a Lockerbox. We take no responsibility for lost or stolen goods.

Event-only patrons are not allowed to enter the campground. Any event-only patrons found in that area risk being evicted from the festival.

FIRST AID & HEALTH

The festival will again feature a comprehensive health service that will include on-site doctors, paramedics and a chill out area. A breathalyser service will also be back on site near the Medical Centre to allow drivers to get an indication of their blood alcohol content. The Main Medical Centre is located behind the General Store. A First Aid Station is also located near the main stage.

Proper footwear is required. Avoidable minor foot injuries to bare feet or those wearing thongs tie up too much of our first aid team’s time. Here’s a good tip – wear boots with double socks and put band-aids on susceptible areas before blisters happen.

Please remember to drink lots of water throughout the day. Sealed plastic (no glass) bottles of water or soft drink can be brought into the entertainment precinct. You can get refills from water taps on site or in the bars.

Under Queensland tobacco laws, smokers must use designated Outdoor Smoking Areas. In consideration of others, and to help prevent cigarette butt litter, please use the Outdoor Smoking Areas that will be set up on site.

RESPONSIBLE SERVICE OF ALCOHOL

The responsible service of alcohol is integral to providing an enjoyable, safe event for all customers and staff. We must ensure patrons do not become unduly intoxicated and present a problem for others. Liquor will not be supplied to disorderly patrons or to anyone who is under 18 years of age.

The Splendour entertainment precinct is a licensed area and you will need to show ID to purchase alcohol.
THE SPLENDOUR FORUM RETURNS FOR 2011

PERRY Farrell, Julian Assange’s mother Christine and Wil Anderson join more than 50 musicians, comedians, film-makers, writers, artists, actors, tech geeks, politicians and scientists as they debate today’s hottest issues, voice opinions, inspire and entertain at SPLENDOUR FORUM, the festival’s live discussion program, 10am-4pm daily.

KEYNOTE INTERVIEW & AUDIENCE Q&A: Perry Farrell with Wil Anderson
Jane’s Addiction’s legendary frontman Perry Farrell chats to comedian and Gruen Transfer host Wil Anderson and then takes questions from the audience.

PANEL: “Big Brother v Little Brother: From Government and Big Business to WikiLeaks and Anonymous, Who Really Controls Our Online Secrets?"
Christine Assange headlines a panel exploring internet freedom and her son’s extraordinary role. Are faceless hackers conquering the worId by stealth from their laptops or helping pioneer a global political, social and cultural revolution by exposing corruption? Why has Julian Assange been labeled “the most dangerous man in the world” while human rights organisations shower him with awards? And what does it all mean for us - the internet-dependent citizens of the world – when governments can censor content and our bank accounts and phones can be hacked?

The Chaser’s Julian Morrow moderates a tech-wise panel including Hungry Beast tech geeks Marc Fennell and Nick Hayden; IT research fellow Dr Suelette Dreyfus, who co-wrote Underground: Tales of Hacking, Madness and Obsession on the Electronic Frontier with Julian Assange in 1997 about his early days in Melbourne's hacking scene; internet security analyst and podcaster Patrick Gray; Julian Assange’s Australian lawyer Grace Morgan; and his campaigning mother Christine as they examine the various forces wrestling for control of our online lives.

PANEL: "Climate Change: Where Are This Generation's Protest Songs?"
Bob Dylan became the voice of social unrest during the US civil rights and anti-war movements of the ‘60s. By the ‘80s, Bob Geldof was urging us to “Feed the World” and Midnight Oil was pushing for Aboriginal land rights and nuclear disarmament. But where are Gen Y’s protest songs in the face of climate change?

Comedian, broadcaster and environmentalist Greig Pickhaver (aka HG Nelson) probes a panel of musicians, artists, scientists and young politicians about their commitment to tackling the "greatest moral challenge of our time". Panelists including Hungry Beast presenter Dan Ilic, who wrote the provocative Climate Scientist Rap; Jake Stone from Bluejuice; Australia's youngest-ever Federal MP Wyatt Roy; SPLENDOUR's environmental manager Mat Morris; Al Gore protégé Guy Abrahams from ClimArte; young climate scientist Dr Ailie Gallant; environmental economist and 2011 Splendid Arts Lab provocateur Jodi Newcombe; and Australian Youth Climate Coalition representative Ahri Tallon get hot under the collar about global warming - and what on Earth we’re doing about it.

WOMEN OF LETTERS: Splendour Edition II
Writers Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire are back to celebrate the beautiful lost art of letter writing with their second special co-ed SPLENDOUR edition of Women of Letters. Artists including Isobel Campbell (ex-Belle & Sebastian), Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Scott Owen (The Living End), Kevin Mitchell (Jebediah, Bob Evans), Hayley Mary (The Jezabels), Johnny McKay (Children Collide) and Jae Laffer (The Panics) each narrate their own personal “Letter to the Song They Wish They’d Written” and perhaps perform it. The audience is then invited to pen and post their own special missives with paper, envelopes and stamps provided.

FILM & PANEL: "Whose Island Home? What Does It Mean To Be An Australian Artist?"
“Wake up - this country needs a f***king shake up…” sang Aussie hip hop crew The Herd in their controversial hit “77%” about racist views towards asylum seekers. But if “Captain Cook was the very first queue jumper (and) it was immigrant labour that made Australia plumper”, then what does it really mean to be Australian? And why, in 2011, do we still suffer from the cultural cringe that rates local sporting heroes over musicians and artists - and demands Aussie artists succeed overseas before they deserve recognition at home?

The Chaser’s Julian Morrow skippers a diverse panel as they navigate the stormy seas of asylum, immigration and national identity – with art as their compass and lifebuoy. Panelists include The Herd frontman Tim Levinson (aka Urthboy); Stav Yiannoukas from Bluejuice; filmmaker Sian Darling and her short film You’d Sing Too, about artists who have survived the refugee experience; Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) general manager Nick O'Byrne, who released The Key Of Sea album of collaborations; former Iranian student protester and author Zarah Ghahramani whose best-seller My Life As A Traitor tells her story of imprisonment by Iranian authorities; Aboriginal actor and 2011 Splendid artist Katherine Beckett; The Chaser’s Dominic Knight and music lawyer Julian Hewitt.

APRA Presents: Songwriters Speak
APRA presents an intimate chat with three Australian songwriters, each at a different stage of their career, including Wally de Backer (aka Gotye), Alexander Gow (Oh Mercy) and Heather Shannon (The Jezabels). Hungry Beast presenter and electropunk singer Monique Schafter chats to the trio of emerging artist, sophomore-album indie darling and established, multi-ARIA award-winner, about their musical influences, lyrical inspirations, favourite songs, musical idols and approaches to the beautiful craft of songwriting.

WIL DOES PARKY
Side-splittingly funny comedian and ABCTV host Wil Anderson returns to SPLENDOUR FORUM with his entertaining Michael Parkinson-style chat show and a sparkling array of guests including former Jane’s Addiction, New Order, QOTSA and Echo &The Bunnymen manager and Lollapalooza co-founder Ted Gardner.

DEBATE: “Social Media: Good or Evil?”
Do social networking sites represent the future of friendship, romance, business and politics? Or are they, as Julian Assange said recently, “appalling spying machines” for governments and an advertising conspiracy to sell us stuff we “like”?

SBS Eurovision host Sam Pang chairs a lively debate about whether Mark Zuckerberg’s revolutionary Facebook software and others like it are ultimately good or evil. Triple J’s tech geek Marc Fennell, comedian Dan Ilic, Can of Worms social media jockey Monique Schafter, Hungry Beast presenter Nick Hayden, The Chaser’s Dominic Knight and media lawyer Julian Hewitt face off about the merits and dangers of posting, friending, liking and tagging.

MUSIC TRIVIA
Team up with your friends and pit your musical wits against celebrity band teams including Eskimo Joe in a session of Music Trivia with hosts Sam Pang and Michaela McGuire.

Introducing the Jagermeister Hunting Lodge

Go into the wild in the Jagermeister Hunting Lodge at this year's SPLENDOUR. Just a short stroll through the woods and you'll be rewarded with some very special treats indeed.

Bringing to life the mystery and history of the Jagermeister brand, the Hunting Lodge is an intimate experience like no other. Made entirely of logs and complete with a wooden deck, timber floor, stone fireplace, and of course, a bar, the Hunting Lodge will give music fans a unique opportunity to kick back in the cosy lounge, enjoy a few drinks, and catch some first-class Djs spinning tunes, all while experiencing where the Jagermeister legend was first born, in the toasty intimate surrounds of the Hunting Lodge.

Featuring DJ Sets from James Blake, Bovines, Architecture in Helsinki, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Cloud Control, Drapht, Alison Wonderland, Sosueme, Future Classic & United Colours to name but a few. Go to splendourinthegrass.com to see all artists and set times.

CAR PASSES

If you are driving to SPLENDOUR you will need to make sure you purchase a Vehicle Entry Pass. Vehicle Entry Passes are required for every vehicle entering the Woodfordia site this year.

There are two types of Vehicle Entry Passes . If you're camping at Woodfordia and plan to drive to the site in a private vehicle, then that vehicle will require a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass, while any Event-Only ticket holders intending to drive into the Woodfordia carpark will need to obtain a Day Parking Vehicle Pass for their vehicle. (NB: Car passes are per vehicle, not per ticketholder. Also, camping vehicles only need one pass, being for the actual day they arrive.)

Thanks to everyone who has already purchased their car pass. If you haven't, we recommend purchasing it soon. This is especially the case for Day Parking passes, which come in the form of a sticker that is posted out to the purchaser. The cut-off date for postage of Day Parking stickers is this coming Monday (July 18th). However, with car passes on sale up until 5pm Tuesday 26th July, we will have an arrangement for the collection of Day Parking passes purchased after Monday, but be warned that the collection will take some time and effort on your part and will delay your arrival at the festival. Buy one now and save yourself - and us - some hassles.

Campground Vehicle Entry Passes are emailed to purchasers. Campers intending to arrive on Thursday 28th July should grab their car pass soon as this is the most popular day for arrivals.

Vehicle Entry Passes are available through Moshtix for $30 (inclusive of fees and charges).

Event-Camping ticket holders will be able to get a full refund on their Campground Vehicle Entry Pass if they arrive in a vehicle carrying a minimum of three people. So it's simply a case of carpooling with two or more mates and you'll get your full $30 back, onsite at the event, to spend however you wish. Refunds do not apply to Day Parking passes.

CAR POOLING

Why not carpool this year? It can save you money. It can make you new friends. It can take the hassle out of getting there and back. Jayride have put their hand up this year to take the effort out of organizing your car-pooling for SPLENDOUR. Jayride connects drivers and passengers to fill spare seats, saving money, emissions and more.

See the jayride.com.au/splendour2011 to join a trip, or even set one up. If you're thinking of coming up by car or you are just looking for a lift, it's worth having a look.

Regarding Splendour 2011 ticket reissue option

In response to the issue of tickets in the resale facility not being snapped up as quickly as they have in the past, we have been looking into the option of incorporating a reissue function into our existing resale facility. While it may seem a simple change on the surface, opening up a reissue system is a little more complicated than just announcing that ticketholders can now transfer their ticket into another person's name.

While we understand your frustration, please be aware that the event has always sold out before and the existing system is custom-designed for a sold-out event and does not presently allow reissues.

Please bear with us while we look into this alternative option to allow you to offload your ticket.

2011 ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES ANNOUNCED

With just over three weeks to go until SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS kicks off for 2011, we are proud to outline the key initiatives to conserve and protect the environment in which the festival operates.

Returning to Woodfordia SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is over the moon to announce its recently received Commended Award from the international 'A Greener Festival Awards' organisation. The Greener Award is based on a 56 point checklist which covers green office policies, energy use and carbon reduction, travel and transport, support for green initiatives, waste management, recycling, water use and environmental protection and noise pollution. The Awards organisers have a team of environmental auditors who visited SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS in 2010 to review and assess our environmental initiatives. Based on this sterling achievement we are excited to announce some cutting edge new environmental initiatives in a bid to pursue our goal of continuous environmental improvement.

On the national front the climate change debate is still playing out between government, industry and the community. However, the delay in formulating a cohesive greenhouse strategy has not held SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS back, in fact quite the opposite. Over the past 7 years SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS has calculated its internal emissions covering artist and crew transport, production, venue electricity and diesel generators and offset these emissions through investment in renewable wind energy generation. We have also given our loyal patrons the opportunity to offset part or all of their travel emissions (to and from the festival) through the purchase of our 'Carbon Offset Ticket'. The ticket, which is a joint venture with the accredited GreenPower supplier Climate Friendly, allows audience members to actively participate in the fight to tackle climate change. Over the past 4 years the 'Carbon Offset Ticket' has achieved the following impressive statistics:

Over 22,000 carbon Offset tickets sold;

More than 2,800 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions offset; and

$85,600 invested in renewable wind energy generation projects.

Apart from tackling our emissions we have renewed our focus on increasing recycling rates and reducing the generation of waste. In line with both our 'Environment Policy' and 'Procurement Policy' we continue to ban non recyclable and non biodegradable packaging and have been working with our construction and production divisions to reduce the consumption of building materials.

We received a huge amount of feedback from our audience members on ways to improve our recycling rates and this year we are pleased to announce three additional recycling initiatives.

Based on past Splendour container recycling systems we are excited to announce our 'Splendour Recycling Club' program that gives our very motivated and switched on audience members a chance to play their part in recycling drink containers across the festival site. Punters will be issued with a 'Splendour Recycling Club' card and will need to collect 5 stamps to go into the draw for awesome daily and major prizes. By bringing back 5 cans and/or plastic drink containers to our dedicated recycling centre, audience members will receive a stamp. Once punters have completed their card (5 stamps) they go into the running to win.

Daily prizes include:

The chance to view a band side of stage

14,000 foot skydive

Acer Iconia Tablet

General Pants Vouchers

Passes to the Splendour Day Spa

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS merchandise.

The Major prize is two VIP event-camping tickets to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2012.

Together with our festival accommodation partner Tepee Life, we are introducing a pilot 'Green Chiefs' program designed to improve recycling outcomes across sections of our rolling campgrounds. Comprising of environmental undergraduate students from a number of Universities from across the land our 'Green Chiefs' will be located in easily identified glorious recycled tepees. These guys and gals will be working their way on a daily basis through their campground areas helping to keep the place shipshape and providing information about recycling and general waste facilities for our campers. We will be carrying out detailed assessments regarding the effectiveness of this program and if the 'Green Chiefs' and our camping brethren are successful in keeping the grass green we will expand the project across all camping areas in 2012.

Our third recycling program is aptly named the 'Green Team' and comprises of 60 highly motivated volunteers who will be scouring the event area collecting cans and plastic bottles for recycling. We are confident that in conjunction with our audience members and these great recycling programs we can achieve some lofty recycling outcomes.
Our incredibly informative and hugely loveable Eco Cops will once again be spreading environmental knowledge (and hugs) across the festival. Again our environmental science undergrad Eco Cops hale from the Sunshine Coast University. The Eco Cops will be located next door to the SPLENDOUR recycling Centre where you can learn all about our environmental initiatives.

SPLENDOUR'S Eco Cops will also be on patrol, making sure that everyone is showing proper respect to the surrounding 'Woodfordia' environment. Please note we will continue to maintain a close eye to ensure all cigarette butts are properly disposed of. Our Eco Cops will be handing out masses of BinYaButts personal ashtrays. We believe this initiative will help stop cigarette butts from entering the surrounding environment.

At our new temporary home SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS has worked hard to help limit the use of private vehicles used by patrons by introducing the car pass system, arranging various bus operators to provide bus and shuttle services, and promoting ride-sharing for those people that have to travel by car. Our car pooling partner Jayride will help patrons to lighten their footprint by sharing a ride to the festival. Check out the ride-share options at jayride.com.au/splendour2011 Car passes are required for every private vehicle entering Woodfordia and are on sale via moshtix.com.au. Further details here. Please note vehicle passes are selling faster as we near the event, with the Thursday Campground Vehicle Entry Pass unsurprisingly proving most popular. Get yours soon if you plan to arrive on Thursday.

For those of you who have already bought your car pass, please note that Moshtix will start sending them out from Wednesday.

If you want to find a ride or have room in your car, make sure you visit jayride.com.au/splendour2011 to check out the ride-sharing options.

SPLENDOUR also supports the use of public transport for travel to and from the event.
Splendour In The Grass Arts Program

It is often said that the unexpectedly memorable moments, the images that stay with SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS audiences, are the arts and interactive experiences that they stumble across onsite. 2011 will be no exception…

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is proud to present the 2011 Arts Program, showcasing artists from Australia and abroad.

SPLENDOUR ARTS Curator Craig Walsh said "Presenting work in the context of a large music festival like Splendour In The Grass is very different to any other environment that an artist would ever be likely to work in. There's a captive audience of many thousands on site for three days but there is a lot of competition for their attention."

The 2011 Splendour Arts Program will present a diverse collection of works including interactive digital media projection, street art and sculpture, performance and monumental installations.

The following artworks will be exhibited across the Woodfordia site at Splendour In The Grass 2011…

CREAM - Curated by Annemarie Kohn
Cream is a series of public artworks that will be created in real time by three artists and presented throughout the festival.

Oliver Of The Sky creates oversized sculptures from cardboard waste. Large, crushed drink cans, urban artifacts and dead pigeons will be built on location at Woodford and lay around the festival grounds, interweaving at points with the work of artist Buff Diss.

Berlin based Buff Diss creates free-hand drawings with masking tape that transform urban environments into sanctuaries of graphic expression. "I'm unsure where my practice sits. All my works are made free hand so I feel the process akin to drawing. A lot of works are installed live, in front of audiences so at times there is a performance aspect as well." said the artist.

Fernando Llanos is considered one of Mexico’s most distinguished young video artists, presenting work in more than twenty countries, including New York’s Guggenheim Museum. For Splendour, Fernando will wander the festival at night using his mobile blimp shaped light source as a roving exhibition tool and interacting with the crowd as one of his many moustached characters.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS by Jordana Maisie
Close Encounters is a large-scale (6.5m diameter) interactive sculpture which takes the form of an unidentified flying object (UFO). The curved polystyrene mirror surface reflects the world around it – the trees, the sky and the festival punters. Text the inhabitants of this UFO during the festival and they will respond! Check splendourinthegrass.com closer to the show for the phone number.

CURIOUS CREATURES by Jimmy McGilchrist and Lachlan Dowd
Beyond the confines of the festival fencing exists a parallel world inhabited by strange and beautiful creatures. Life sized shadows of creatures roaming behind the fence perimeter respond to the presence of the human audience within the festival. As audience members approach the creatures their shadows appear on the fence and they are able to interact, transformed from viewer into performer.

STUDIO69 by Andy Forbes
Tent of Miracles and Porn Tsar Pictures present Sphincter Cinema Movie Production "Studio 69". Best Time Ever is also one of the largest sundials in the world, the rake of the stair mirroring exactly the latitude of the hill on which it is placed, the tip pointing due south. It is a festival clock, literally the Best Time Ever.

Two of the major pieces included in this year’s Splendour Arts Program, Curious Creatures and Close Encounters, have been produced as part of SPLENDID. Splendid is a partnership between Lismore Regional Gallery, Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA), the Australia Council for the Arts and Splendour in the Grass to develop artistic talent and to offer festival audiences new creative experiences. Splendour In The Grass has contributed $150 000 to the Splendid project over the past three years.

Splendour In The Grass Producer Jessica Ducrou said “The Splendid initiative has been a fantastic collaboration that has and will produce some inspired presentations at the festival. Three years down the road we look forward to showing the best possible installments at the festival yet.”

The program is open to young and emerging artists (under 30 years old or in the first 5 years of their practice) who work in the visual arts, theatre, dance, design, installation, architecture, digital media, sound, text, community arts and other creative pursuits.

Splendid includes a residential Arts Lab, mentorship and commissioning of new artworks to be presented at Splendour in the Grass and then toured to major festival audiences in Australia and internationally.

Open your eyes to the Splendour Arts Program 2011!

Visit the THE GLOBAL VILLAGE at Splendour In The Grass this July and take your very own race around the cultures of the world!

With dance workshops, healing arts, cultural crafts, harmonic chanting & late night world music jams, THE GLOBAL VILLAGE showcases cultural diversity and adds to the tapestry of the SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS experience.

The Temple Stage returns in 2011 with an array of dance and music workshops to awaken and inspire you, body and soul - from early morning yoga to warm up your weary body, to afternoon drum & dance sessions to ignite your inner fire.

In 2011, THE GLOBAL VILLAGE will present the inaugural Splendour Peace Parade. Find your own place in the parade - drumming, dancing, twirling, singing or lighting the way. Afternoon workshops on the Temple Stage will prepare punters to participate in this age-old festival tradition.

Inspired by the Gyuto Monks of Tibet, the parade will be dedicated to peace. Join us in the Chai Lounge to make your own prayer flag that will fly high above the parade on Sunday afternoon.

After dark, The Temple Stage will showcase short films from Little Film Big Heart plus a selection of documentaries and world animations. For session times check out the schedule on THE GLOBAL VILLAGE webpage.

This year, with SPLENDOUR campers arriving from Wednesday 27 July, The Temple Stage will be opening a little earlier. We'll be in full swing from the evening of Thursday 28 July.

Join us for a night of gypsy burlesque revelry, earth stomping drumbeats, extraordinary feats of dance genius and soulful sounds. The unique talents of Rapskallion, Sambiliscious, The Next Step, A French Butler Called Smith, Drum Cult and Medicine Drum will be woven together by our MC Mr Percival and topped off by our special guests, The Gyuto Monks of Tibet.

Now regular guests of THE GLOBAL VILLAGE, the Gyuto Monks will offer five days of peace, pleasure and powerful chanting. Throughout the weekend the monks will create an intricate sand mandala in their Gompa Tent as well as harmonic chanting appearances on The Temple Stage.

One of SPLENDOUR'S most popular chill zones, the Chai Tent is back this year with a new décor but that same warm and welcoming atmosphere. Set within this venue, the Chai Lounge stage offers storytelling and intimate music throughout the morning before bursting back to life in the wee hours to seduce you with world music grooves co-created by our house band Channel Free plus special guests.

If you're into alternative therapies then you'll definitely want to check out The Healing Element. Relaxation and KaHuna massage, Zen Thai shiatsu, homeopathic first aid, tarot & psychic readings, reiki and acupuncture will all be available, so be sure to nurture your body & soul in between bands at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS this year.

You'll find all of the above plus Light'n'Up Lanterns, late night fire extravaganza with bamboo art from the BooCrew, a plethora of fabulous food, craft stalls and of course a few surprises at THE GLOBAL VILLAGE at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS.

KIDZ KLUB

The parent's among the SPLENDOUR punters will be happy to learn that there's a whole world of splendiferous fun for kids at the event as well! Exciting for children and relaxing for parents KidzKlub has been described as a magical oasis.

With an entire field allocated to our little SPLENDOUR fans and their parents, this mini festival will be in a fully fenced area purpose designed for parents and children to relax, play and unleash their creative spirit. There will be a crèche, an art/craft tent, a large sandpit, clown school, face painting, a dress-up theatre, drummers and performers. There will be storytellers and musicians to amuse and entertain. There will be quiet areas to unwind and an active zone to challenge the sportiest of children.

All of the daytime facilities and services require parents to remain within the KidzKlub Area supervising their own children. The KidzKlub Staff are provided only to entertain and facilitate activities. From 6pm – 12am there is a crèche facility available and private babysitters can be arranged prior to the festival for daytime care and for any children under 3 at night.

For more info about KidzKlub and babysitters at SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS check out splendourinthegrass.com

VEHICLE ENTRY PASSES ON SALE TOMORROW

This is a reminder that Vehicle Entry Passes for SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2011 go on sale at 9am AEST tomorrow via moshtix.com.au

All vehicles entering the Woodfordia site will need to carry a Vehicle Entry Pass. This measure has been introduced as a way of addressing the traffic issues that affected last year’s otherwise brilliant first SPLENDOUR at Woodfordia.

To reduce the number of vehicles on local roads and within the site, this year SPLENDOUR will be putting a quota on the number of vehicles allowed to enter Woodfordia each day. This quota will be implemented via the sale of a set but adequate daily number of car passes.

There are two types of vehicle passes – a Campground Entry Vehicle Pass that will be required for vehicles with Event-Camping Ticketholders wishing to enter the campground, while a Day Parking Vehicle Pass will be required for vehicles with Event-Only Ticketholders wishing to park in the Woodfordia carpark from Friday to Sunday.

Campers will need to nominate which day they will be arriving – either Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday - and purchase a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass for their preferred day. Day Parking Passes cover parking from Friday through to Sunday (no entry for Day Parkers prior to Friday, however Event-Only ticketholders may travel to the site by bus on Thursday).

Vehicle Passes will cost $30 (including fees and charges) and there is a limit of two passes per purchaser. Passes must be purchased in advance via Moshtix – they will not be available for sale at the venue. Vehicle details are not required at time of purchase.

For Event-Camping ticketholders, the $30 Campground Vehicle Entry Pass will be FULLY REFUNDABLE if their vehicle is carrying a minimum of three people. It's simply a case of ride-sharing with two or more mates and you'll get your full $30 back at the event.

Once parked in the campground, all campers’ vehicles will have to remain stationary for the duration of the event. Last year, vehicles moving around within the campground and to and from the site added significantly to the traffic problems. Staying put once in the campground will ease the traffic and also allow SPLENDOUR to have more inward bound lanes open for arriving vehicles. There will be shuttles operating to and from Woodford township should campers need to get supplies.

To alleviate traffic congestion while leaving the campground after the event, an additional exit point will be opened and the camper departure deadline has been extended to 5pm on Monday 1 August (it was midday in 2010). A number of food stalls will remain open to cater for campers who leave later in the day on Monday. So avoid the rush and delay your pack-up for a few hours, have a coffee and a bite to eat, then make your exit later at your leisure. It will also help you miss the regular Monday morning crush of vehicles heading into Brisbane city and airport.

Campers who show up with less than 3 people in their vehicle and thus forfeit their refund can rest easy in the knowledge that half the remaining profits will go to The Australian Red Cross to assist with national and international recovery efforts for the recent natural disasters, while the other half will benefit the people most inconvenienced by our traffic, the Woodford community, specifically the Woodford State School P&C.

Please note that the daily quota and car pass system forms part of an overall Traffic Management Plan that we have put together in liaison with a stakeholder group including all of the relevant authorities. Please follow the directions of Police and traffic controllers as you approach Woodfordia.

WANT TO RIDE-SHARE?
If you have room in your car or would like to find a lift, please check out the dedicated SPLENDOUR carpool page on excellent ride-share website jayride.com.au

MY CAR’S A UNICORN…
To make the ride to and from SPLENDOUR that little bit more fun, we'll be staging a competition for the best decorated vehicle. The competition named "My Car's A Unicorn, What's Yours?" is sure to brighten things up! To be eligible, you will need to have 3 or more occupants in your vehicle.

We'll be judging in two categories - SPLENDOUR's Choice and People's Choice. If your vehicle wins, you and your fellow passengers will receive event-camping tickets to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2012. There'll be SPLENDOUR's Choice winners announced each day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and the public will be able to vote on the People's Choice online.

EVENT - CAMPING TICKETS SOLD OUT

The organisers of SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2011 would like to advise Event-Camping tickets have now sold out.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS Co-Producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco said "Whilst slower than past years, Event-Camping tickets have now officially sold out! Event-Only tickets are still available with offsite camping, check out your options on the Splendour website. We look forward to presenting a top notch show this year, thanks for your ongoing support."

Those who really want to camp on site but missed out on Event-Camping Tickets need not despair! They can always try their luck when the resale facility kicks in on Thursday 26 May. The resale facility gives those who are no longer able to attend the opportunity to offer their ticket up for resale to someone who missed out. The resale facility will remain open until a few days prior to the festival.

While the festival campground is the most convenient place to soak yourself in SPLENDOUR goodness, Event-Only Tickets are still available for purchase and there's always the option of staying at one of the camp grounds near to the SPLENDOUR site. Check splendourinthegrass.com for information about accommodation options near to Woodfordia.

Finally, the Pic Me! competition on SPLENDOUR's Facebook page is now closed for entries but there are some brilliant pictures there of SPLENDOUR punters winning it in the fun stakes. Take a look if you have a few minutes spare and relive the memories!

Splendour

TICKET SALES TO BE SUSPENDED AND RELAUNCHED

The organisers of the annual SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS event would like to advise that all ticket sales for the event will be suspended tonight at 9pm AEST and will be RELAUNCHED at 9am Friday 6 May AEST.

Numerous external technical issues, with both Westpac and the festival’s ticket outlet Moshtix, resulted in many people being unable to purchase tickets to the event for a number of hours after they went on sale this morning.

For the duration of the morning Westpac Credit and Debit cards and Westpac affiliated cards issued by Citibank, Suncorp, St George, Heritage Building Society, Cashcard and Jetstar were out of service due to a fault at a Westpac data centre. Thousands of people were affected and the organisers of Splendour felt that taking this step would give those card holders who were affected by this bank glitch a fair chance to secure tickets.

Event Producers, Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco said “We have decided to suspend all ticket sales at 9pm tonight so that all systems can be triple checked before relaunching tomorrow morning at 9am"

“We understand how frustrating it was for so many people this morning. We did expect a ticket rush but none of us expected what happened this morning and unfortunately it was all beyond our control. We were very concerned that all those people who hold Westpac and affiliated cards were disadvantaged today as well and that has contributed to this decision.”

An allocation of both event-camping and event-only tickets has now been set aside to be put on sale tomorrow morning via moshtix.com.au

Splendour has sold out every year since the event’s inception. There has never been a second chance like this to get your hands on a Splendour ticket!

Spread the word!

SPLENDOUR COMMENT ON TODAY'S TICKET SALES

Comment from Event Producer, Jessica Ducrou on SPLENDOUR 2011 ticket sales as at 1:40pm, Thursday 5 May:

To the best of our knowledge, all the technical issues with both Westpac and Moshtix have now been fixed and sales are moving at a much faster pace. Anyone who tried to use cards from any of the following banks earlier today and was rejected should try again now.

Westpac Credit and Debit cards and Westpac affiliated cards issued by Citibank, Suncorp, St George, Heritage Building Society, Cashcard and Jetstar.

Thanks to you all for your patience!

--------------------------------------------

Comment from Event Producer, Jessica Ducrou on SPLENDOUR 2011 ticket sales as at 12.15pm, Thursday 5 May:

“Splendour In The Grass 2011 tickets were released for sale through Moshtix at 9am this morning. There have been some major problems with Westpac Credit and Debit cards today as well as Westpac affiliated cards issued by Citibank, Suncorp, St George, Heritage Building Society, Cashcard and Jetstar. These problems, alongside significant technical issues with the Moshtix site have slowed down the processing of Splendour’s ticketing sales. It has been very frustrating for everyone. We would like to reassure ticket buyers that sales are still going through, just at a slower rate than we would all like. Thanks for your patience and perseverance!”

It wasn't fun for anyone, so resolving the problem was our first priority after the 2010 event was over.

We've spent the past nine months researching options and checking out how other events around the world have addressed this issue. We've been working with all the relevant authorities to formulate a plan that will reduce the number of vehicles entering the site and spread their entry and exit over an extended period of time. So here's the plan…

This year SPLENDOUR will be issuing a set but adequate number of car passes for entry into the site each day. For event-camping ticketholders, this means that those who wish to bring a vehicle on site will need to pre-purchase a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass for a FULLY REFUNDABLE $30 fee, which includes all booking fees and charges. Please note that these passes must be pre-purchased and will not be available on site. To receive the refund, your vehicle must be carrying a minimum of three people, so it's simply a case of carpooling with two or more mates and you'll get your full $30 back, onsite at the event, to spend however you wish.

Travel light and it'll be alright. The idea here is to keep your kit simple, with just the essentials you'll need for a comfortable stay. Arrive with a couch and Jacuzzi and you'll be directed to the closest op shop. Make love not landfill!

There will be a capped number of passes issued for vehicle entry each day and campers will need to nominate which day they will be arriving and purchase a Campground Vehicle Entry Pass for the appropriate day. It's worth noting that if you arrive on Wednesday you'll receive priority camping close to the festival entry, as will campers who arrive on public transport. The early bird catches the best camp spot at SPLENDOUR!

What happens if you can't get a pass for the day you want to arrive? Don't stress! While a very decent number of passes will be available for pre-purchase for each day, this system is designed to spread the arrival of campers over a number of days. If all Campground Vehicle Entry Passes for a particular day are already sold out, patrons will have the choice of arriving on an alternative day or they can take advantage of the Free Parking Station that will be serviced by the festival shuttle service to get them and their gear to and from the event.

Once parked in the camping area, all vehicles will have to remain stationary for the duration of the event. Last year, vehicles moving around within the campground and to and from the site added significantly to the traffic problems. Staying put once in the campground will ease the traffic and also allow SPLENDOUR to have more inward bound lanes open for arriving vehicles. There will be shuttles operating to and from Woodford township, should campers need to get supplies.

To alleviate traffic congestion after the event, an additional exit point will be opened and the exit deadline will be extended to 5pm on Monday 1 August (it was midday in 2010). A number of food stalls will remain open to cater for campers who leave later in the day on Monday. So sit back, put your feet up and make your trip home at a leisurely pace!

Splendour producers, Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco said "We want to assure all our Splendour campers that this system is not designed to take money out of their pockets. All booking fees and charges are included in the $30 fee, so they won't be out of pocket one cent if they have three or more people in their car."

"We simply cannot have a repeat of last year's traffic situation. We believe that this system - which is a hybrid of a number of plans that overseas festivals have used to address the same problem – provides the necessary incentive to carpool and this, alongside a cap on vehicle numbers, will reduce traffic congestion."

Campers who show up with less than 3 people in their vehicle and thus forfeit their refund can rest assured that the money will be well spent. We plan to lend a hand both globally and locally. Half the funds will go to The Australian Red Cross to assist with national and international recovery efforts for the numerous recent natural disasters. The other half will benefit the people most inconvenienced by our traffic, the Woodford community, specifically the Woodford State School P&C.

What do you do if you don't have anyone to ride with you? We've partnered up with most excellent ride-share website jayride.com.au to create a dedicated SPLENDOUR carpool page where punters can hook up with other people heading to the show. You can even sign up and connect to Jayride via Facebook and it's also mobile web capable so you can access Jayride while on the move for all the carpooling info plus details about bus transfers as well. So make some new mates, save some cash and get yourself to SPLENDOUR in the most environmentally karmic fashion this July!

Of course a great travel alternative is public transport and we encourage this option. Buses will be servicing all routes leading to Woodfordia, with some services provided by the festival and others handled by private operators. Further details of the Public Transport Network and park-and-ride locations will be available soon on the SPLENDOUR website.

Now, the fun stuff!

To make the ride to and from SPLENDOUR that little bit more fun and colourful, we'll be staging a competition for the best decorated vehicle. The competition named "My Car's A Unicorn, What's Yours?" is sure to brighten things up!

We'll be judging in two categories - SPLENDOUR's Choice and People's Choice. If your vehicle wins, you and all who arrived with you will receive event-camping tickets to SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2012. There'll be SPLENDOUR's Choice winners announced each day on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and the public will be able to vote on the People's Choice online. Here's a quiet heads up, there are a few crafters on the SPLENDOUR crew so crafty cars will be popular…best you start crocheting that radio antenna 'foxtail' now!

Finally, when you buy your SPLENDOUR ticket this year, please consider purchasing an additional carbon offset ticket as well. For the last three years, in partnership with Climate Friendly, SPLENDOUR has offered patrons the option to offset their carbon footprint via this additional ticket and it's only $3! So go on, do the right thing!

The car pass system and carbon offset tickets are just two of a number of green initiatives that will be implemented onsite this year. Stay tuned for more details in coming weeks.

TWITTER HUNT IS BACK!

To put a big smile on many faces we're happy to announce that the SPLENDOUR Twitter Hunt is back! Last year we hid some General Admission Event Camping tickets in Brisbane and Sydney, revealing clues to their whereabouts via our Twitter . This year we'll again be hiding tickets, and the good news is that a couple of tickets will also be hiding in Melbourne! We can't tell you too much more yet, but we suggest you start following us on Twitter if you want to be in with a chance of winning. More info to come very soon!

OFFICIAL 2011 SPLENDOUR LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT

OFFICIAL 2011 LINEUP ANNOUNCE

"…you could barely wipe the smiles off our dials. Thank you Splendour for anticipating our every whim, and fulfilling them. A truly unforgettable weekend." Groupie

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS - the annual, ephemeral city of sounds that exists solely for sweet music and good times will transform Woodfordia, near Woodford, south east Queensland from Friday 29 to Sunday 31 July.

The eleventh SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS event will see 81 acts giving their splendiferous best across three stages, the Amphitheatre, Mix Up Stage and GW McLennan Tent.

Continuing a tradition of serving up quality line-ups that span the breadth of an ever changing music landscape, SPLENDOUR 2011 will offer punters a heady selection of debut performances, festival favourites and promising emerging artists alongside exclusive appearances by some of the biggest and most established names in music today.

But first, we need to fill you in on some other important event information…

With one year at Woodfordia under our collective belts, regular SPLENDOUR punters might feel that they’ll be familiar with the site – but don’t think it’s going to be a repeat of 2010. We like to mix things up a bit and keep you on your toes! There will be a number of new bars, some new spaces to explore and changes here and there around the site. More detailed information will be made available in the coming weeks but here’s a brief overview of what to expect...

The Woodfordia campgrounds will open from 7am Wednesday 27 July until 5pm Monday 1 August. Please note the entire festival site including the three main stages (Amphitheatre, Mix Up Stage and GW McLennan Tent) will operate on Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. For those camping onsite, the event area will open from 9am Thursday 28 July with a bunch of spaces and entertainment in full swing to keep you busy right across the weekend, including the following much loved festival features…

The GLOBAL VILLAGE is back with more of the performances, workshops, lifestyle outlets, market stalls and global food fair that punters love. That golden triangle that is the TIPI FOREST will also be back and ready to mesmerize. Be sure to check out the VERY SMALL MALL and book a treatment at the SPLENDOUR DAY SPA to be looking your festival best before you drop into the SMIRNOFF COCKTAIL BAR, MO'ROCKIN' WINE BAR or the new BAR NEW ORLEANS by the “bayou”. Oh so much to do before the music even starts!

Some of the most memorable SPLENDOUR moments come from the amazing arts you stumble across on site. Aside from the all important music and entertainment spaces, punters can expect to see an amazing new SPLENDID ARTS PROGRAM.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS has a history of delivering innovative initiatives to lighten our environmental footprint. SPLENDOUR and its army of committed punters have offset thousands of tonnes of carbon via carbon offset tickets and recycled hundreds of thousands of drink containers through our popular recycling system that will make a return this year. Watch this space for info about some great incentives to get involved in keeping SPLENDOUR green!

Finally, due to the very heavy traffic congestion when arriving and departing SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2010 we have spent the past year working on initiatives that will simultaneously ease traffic on local roads and within Woodfordia, whilst also creating a greener event. Borrowing from other International music festivals that have experienced similar issues, and in an effort to radically reduce traffic congestion, we will be implementing a car pass system which will encourage carpooling. More info on this plan and all of SPLENDOUR’s environmental initiatives will be supplied in the coming weeks.

Now, getting back to the real business at hand! Get ready to pick and choose from an incredible line-up of acts and soak it in for three monumental days. SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS is proud to present you with the long list of acts that will take to the three main stages in 2011.

COLDPLAY (only Australian show) • KANYE WEST (only Australian show) • JANE'S ADDICTION • THE HIVES • PULP • THE LIVING END • THE MARS VOLTA • REGINA SPEKTOR (only 2011 show…anywhere) • BLISS N ESO • PNAU • MOGWAI (only Australian show) • DJ SHADOW • FRIENDLY FIRES • GLASVEGAS • THE GRATES • DEVENDRA BANHART • MODEST MOUSE • THE MIDDLE EAST • KAISER CHIEFS • JAMES BLAKE • KELE • THE VINES • ELBOW • ESKIMO JOE • NOAH AND THE WHALE • CHILDREN COLLIDE • THIEVERY CORPORATION • CUT COPY • ISOBEL CAMPBELL AND MARK LANEGAN • THE KILLS • BLUEJUICE • BLACK JOE LEWIS & THE HONEYBEARS (featuring THE RELATIVES) • ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI • FOSTER THE PEOPLE • THE PANICS • JEBEDIAH • THE VACCINES • GOMEZ • BOY AND BEAR • GOTYE • DOES IT OFFEND YOU YEAH? Set those dates aside for more music, arts and culture from around the globe.

We would also like to advise that any damage inflicted on the Woodfordia site during January’s devastating floods throughout SE QLD will be well and truly repaired by the time of the festival. “We wouldn’t be announcing Woodfordia as the location for the 2011 Splendour In the Grass festival if we weren’t completely confident that was the case,” said Splendour’s co-producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco.

This will be the second year that Splendour in the Grass will be held at the Woodfordia location while the approval process for the festival’s own permanent home at North Byron Parklands continues. Since 2006, Splendour In The Grass has been working toward establishing a permanent sustainable event venue to stage the festival at the 660 acre North Byron Parklands site at Yelgun in the north of the shire. The Parklands project is still undergoing a comprehensive approval process with the NSW Department of Planning and can’t be considered for this year’s festival. We will keep you posted on any news on a Department of Planning decision.

The big news on the 2011 lineup and ticketing info will be announced in coming months. We’re looking forward to sharing it with you.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2011

Friday July 29th, Saturday July 30th and Sunday July 31st
‘Woodfordia’
Woodrow Rd
Via Woodford, Qld

See you in Woodford,
Splendour
twitter.com/SITG
