MOBILE PHONE COVERAGE UPDATE

We are very happy that Telstra has made the commendable decision to deploy 2 COWs for Splendour 2014. We understand that this will improve mobile services for Telstra customers both at Splendour and in the areas immediately surrounding North Byron Parklands for the duration of the event.

With regard to Telstra's permanent solution, North Byron Parklands is still in a trial phase and not in a position to invest in permanent infrastructure, but we look forward to working with Telstra on a mutually beneficial plan for the future.

Following this latest news, we are now pleased to say that all 3 main mobile carriers – Telstra, Optus and Vodafone – will have additional capacity at Splendour.  Plus, our friends at Spotify are providing additional connectivity via free public wi-fi hotspots for internet around the festival site.

Big ups Telstra!

Friday 2.30-3:45pm

“The Earth Is Full." This is how Paul Gilding describes the state of our stressed planet in his gripping TED talk that has already clocked up more than a million views. So what does the former global CEO of Greenpeace, acclaimed author and now one of the world's leading advisers on a sustainable economy believe the future holds for us? Despite all evidence indicating disaster, Gilding remains an unstoppable optimist and believes humanity will rise to the occasion, facing change on a scale and at a speed incomprehensible today.

Democracy in action comes to Splendour with our sincerely flattering festival edition of Q&A  - Australia’s favourite two-way TV show that brings punters, pollies and pundits together to thrash out the hot issues of the day. Splendour’s Q&A won’t be on ABC TV, but you can join Q&A host, Tony “I’ll take that as a comment” Jones, for an opportunity to ask questions directly to our politicians and opinion makers from across the political spectrum.  To ask a question, email qanda@splendourinthegrass.com

Discussion Panel: BIG BROTHER IS DEFINITELY WATCHING: Why should you care about Edward Snowden and his leaks?
Saturday 12.15-1:45pm

Why should revelations by former US National Security Agency contractor-turned international asylum seeker Edward Snowden about mass internet and phone surveillance matter to you? If you’re not a terrorist or a criminal, why should you care whether the Google searches you key in, the Facebook updates you post, the gmails you send and the Skype calls you make might be monitored? How much can you trust governments, their agencies and digital media and telecommunications corporations when they operate in secrecy?

In an Australian first, join our expert panel of former NSA officer-turned whistleblower Thomas Drake, whose own leaks inspired Snowden, attorney Jesselyn Radack, the Director of National Security and Human Rights with the US Government Accountability Project and who defended both Drake and Snowden, Greens’ communications spokesman Senator Scott Ludlam, technology academic and writer Dr Suelette Dreyfus and award-winning security journalist Patrick Gray, as they uncover the truth of mass collection of ordinary citizens’ data and why your privacy matters.

WOMEN OF LETTERS: Splendour Edition V
Saturday 10-11:30am

Writers Marieke Hardy and Michaela McGuire are back to celebrate the beautiful lost art of letter writing with their annual special festival edition of this lovely literary salon. Join artists including Lauren Mayberry (Chvrches), Courtney Barnett, Gossling, Jennifer Boyce (Ball Park Music), Nkechi Anele (Saskwatch), Liz Drummond (Little May) and musical comedians Alice Fraser and Genevieve Fricker as they each narrate their “Letter to the Song They Wish They’d Written” and maybe perform it.

APRA Presents: SONGWRITERS SPEAK
Friday 12.15-1:45pm

Join Australian songwriters including Dave Faulkner (Hoodoo Gurus), the guys from Rüfüs and Japanese Wallpaper (aka 17-year-old wunderkind producer Gab Strum) with singer Wafia as they chat to ABC broadcaster Robbie Buck about their musical influences, lyrical inspirations and the songwriting craft.

Satire: A RATIONAL FEAR
Sunday 3.30-4.30pm

Fast-paced satirical panel show A Rational Fear returns with more of its trademark cutting-edge comedy with social and political bite. Join host, writer and producer Dan Ilic (Hungry Beast, Can of Worms) and some of the funniest brains in Australian satire including writer/comedian/broadcaster Lewis Hobba (triple j, Hungry Beast), comedians Greg Fleet, Genevieve Fricker and James Colley and special guests.

Discussion panel: LOADED: Honest Conversations About Drugs
Sunday 10-11:30am

“Sex, drugs and rock and roll”. Does the cliché ring true for Australian artists? Do substances help or hinder creativity? Journalist Andrew McMillen, whose new book, Talking Smack: Honest Conversations About Drugs is based on interviews with 14 Australian musicians – including Paul Kelly, Gotye, Tina Arena and Steve Kilbey - is joined by musicians Scott Owen (The Living End), MC REMi, Dan Mac (Art vs Science) and the guys from Kingswood, comedian Greg Fleet, former Au Go Go Records owner Greta Moon (now a doctor specialising in psychiatry with an interest in addiction medicine), and writer/broadcaster Dominic Knight (ABC radio, The Chaser), as they discuss their own experiences with alcohol, illicit, prescription and legal drugs, rehab and sobriety.

Discussion Panel: CHANGING THE WORLD with beer, toilet paper and mouse clicks
Friday 10-11:30am

Want to save the world but don’t know where to start? Writer/broadcaster Dominic Knight (ABC local radio, The Chaser) takes tips from the some of Australia’s leading activists for climate, social, political and economic change, including social entrepreneur Simon Griffiths, Australian Youth Climate Coalition co-founder and now Earth Hour Australia director Anna Rose; veteran environmental activist Paul Gilding; Australian Ethical Investments director Mara Bun; and Simon Sheikh, former national director of advocacy group GetUp.

Film: SILENCED
Sunday 12-1:45pm

Only 11 Americans have ever been charged under the Espionage Act of 1917, eight of them in the past six years. In this Australian-first, special screening, Oscar-nominated documentarian James Spione recounts the personal journeys of two of those accused, former NSA officer Thomas Drake and ex-CIA operative John Kiriakou, who first revealed “waterboarding”, along with Jesselyn Radack, the accountability advocate who helped bring their cases to light. With particular resonance in the post-Snowden era, Silenced makes an impassioned and thought-provoking defense of whistleblowers as an indispensible unit in a functioning democracy. Executive Produced by Susan Sarandon.

Discussion panel: How Far Would You Go To Tell The Truth?
Sunday 1:45-3pm

If you saw something seriously wrong going on, would you be willing to risk your job to expose it? Go to prison? Flee your country?
Meet the whistleblower who inspired Edward Snowden, former NSA crypto-linguist Thomas Drake, who was spied on and charged by the very government he had worked for. Also on the panel are US attorney Jesselyn Radack, who defended both Snowden and Drake and has been the subject of surveillance herself because of her work and WA Greens Senator Scott Ludlam, who has championed whistleblower protection in federal parliament. Hosted by Dr Suelette Dreyfus, author of the first major book about computer hacking in Australia (with Julian Assange) and a technology researcher.

FORUM TWILIGHT FILM FESTIVAL

The Forum Twilight Film Festival brings you a killer line up of documentaries and Q and As with film directors, as well as showcasing the best in short film with A TASTE OF TROPFEST. Other films being screened include:

Documentary and Q&A: IN BOB WE TRUST

In Bob We Trust follows the irreverent philosopher and working class hero Father Bob Maguire, the dissident priest loved by the faithful and the secular alike. For almost 40 years he dedicated his life to improving the lives of others, especially the poor and disadvantaged, including non-Catholics. His enforced retirement as South Melbourne parish priest provides a dramatic time bomb to the documentary, where he is joined on screen by many of his fellow parish travellers and his long-time collaborator, John Safran. Written and directed by Lynn-Maree Milburn, produced by Richard Lowenstein (Dogs In Space). Film to be followed by Q&A with Richard Lowenstein and webchat with Father Bob.

Documentary and Q&A: HOW TO LOSE JOBS AND ALIENATE GIRLFRIENDS

First time filmmaker Tom Meadmore follows his girlfriend and boss as they pursue their respective dreams to become musicians. His own insecurities flare as he struggles to find a story, and begins challenging their flaws, on camera, jeopardizing the film, their relationships and careers. It’s a film about what it takes to evolve a passion into a profession, asking ‘what does it take to be successful?’ It’s about the creative process, self-motivation and overcoming self-doubt. It’s also about what happens when one projects ones own fears onto those closest to them. Preview screening to be followed by Q&A.

Documentary: Big Name, No Blanket

George Rrurrambu Burarrawanga was the charismatic frontman of the pioneering Warumpi Band of the 1980s, who combined rock ‘n’ roll, reggae, pop and traditional culture to raise awareness about Indigenous contemporary issues. Dubbed “the black Mick Jagger” for his energetic performances and hailed a legend for being the first to sing pop songs in Aboriginal languages, George was also the first Aboriginal man to introduce clap sticks and boomerangs into modern music that reached wider Australian audiences. George made an extraordinary contribution to contemporary Aboriginal music and reconciliation before his untimely death in 2007 at age 51. This is his story.
