BEST SPLENDOUR EVER? HELL YES!
Splendour in the Grass made a triumphant return to North Byron Parklands over the weekend with a capacity crowd of 27,500 punters reveling in a picture-perfect mix of music, art, discussion, food, craft, markets and splendid weather.
Over 80 Australian and international acts graced the event's three main stages, while many more performed at Splendour’s other destination spaces across the weekend. Our new site layout, including the majestic Amphitheatre, was a huge success!
On Friday Ball Park Music prompted a late afternoon sing along when they covered Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The Strypes delivered a blistering tight set at the GW McLennan Stage. Peking Duk, Kelis and Childish Gambino played to huge crowds at the Mix Up. Then at the end of the night, the Amphitheatre filled to the brim for hip-hop legends OutKast when they played in Australia for the very first time.
On Saturday Violent Soho continued on their trajectory path with a killer set. Future Islands held a massive GW McLennan audience transfixed. Sky Ferreira, Art Vs Science, Metronomy and RÜFÜS kept the Mix Up at capacity for hours on end. Late addition to the lineup Foals delivered on their reputation for furious live sets with lead singer Yannis Philippakis jumping into the audience towards the end of the set. And City and Colour brought the night to a climax, owning the headline spot!
On Sunday UK dance act Jungle had a totally jammed Mix Up Tent jumping for the duration of their set, followed by a massive crowd for Sam Smith. Punters at the GW McLennan tent were treated to a gorgeous set by Swedish sister act First Aid Kit. And in the Amphitheatre Grouplove, Chvrches, Hilltop Hoods (with surprise guest Dan Sultan) and Foster The People delivered awesome hit after hit until Lily Allen capped off the night with a sing-a-long to a capacity crowd.
In between the music, Splendour punters foraged from over 60 food outlets, sang like no one was listening at Miss Saigon Karoake, gave Q&A’s Tony Jones a rock star reception at the Splendour Forum, put a bird on it at Splendour In The Craft, got lost in the Tipi Forest, took part in the conscious evolution at the Global Village, interacted with visual and performance artists and SO MUCH MORE!

HANDY HINTS FOR SPLENDOUR 2014!
Mother nature has been kind this year, and North Byron Parklands is looking picture perfect. The forecast is for some possible showers over the weekend, but nothing significant. The days are set for medium to lightweight fabrics, with winter knits and jackets required for the evenings and early risers.
POLICE AND SECURITY
The festival is a large town in its own right and a town needs policing. Authorities have been working with organisers to ensure your time at the festival is safe and enjoyable. Police and security will both be present on site. Drug detection dogs will be at the festival. Police random breath testing units will also be active on local roads.
We recommend event-only patrons stay on site for a while after the main stages finish to avoid a mass exodus. Restaurants and food stalls will be open until 2am Friday to Sunday and there will be late night entertainment in the Tipi Forest, Global Village, Smirnoff Cocktail Bar, Red Bull Music Academy and Mad Mex Fiesta.
Anyone caught trying to fence jump or enter the venue unlawfully faces arrest and a hefty fine. Fence jumping is trespassing and offenders will be taken to the on-site Police Station.
The possession, sale or use of illicit drugs or substances is strictly prohibited. Any persons found with them in their possession will be subject to police action and will be evicted from the festival.
Event-only patrons are not allowed to enter the campground. Any event-only patrons found in that area risks being evicted from the festival.
Stage diving, crowd surfing and moshing are prohibited. Those attempting such activities will be evicted. Aggressive behaviour is rare at Splendour, but anyone who does behave in a threatening or inappropriate manner towards other patrons or event staff will be removed from the festival.
FIRST AID & HEALTH
Our comprehensive health service will include on-site doctors, paramedics and a chill out area. The main Medical Centre is located just inside the Main Entry gates. There will be a PATRON SAFETY HOTLINE that those at the festival can call regarding safety, medical or security matters. This number will be on display around the site.
If you require first aid or assistance please either make your way to a first aid station, speak to the nearest security guard who can make radio contact with the medical team, or call the Patron Safety Hotline.
Proper footwear is required. Minor foot injuries to those with bare feet or wearing thongs take up too much of our first aid team’s time. BYO back-up band-aids and analgesics.
Please remember to drink lots of water throughout the day. EMPTY plastic (no glass) bottles of water or soft drink can be brought into the entertainment precinct. You can get refills from water taps on site or in the bars.
A breathalyser service to allow drivers to get an indication of their blood alcohol content will be on site at the Keys Please Kiosk near the Main Entry gates. Don’t drive if you’re tired or intoxicated. Organise a designated driver or catch a bus instead.
No smoking is permitted within enclosed eating and food preparation areas, bar areas, tents and stalls as required by the Tobacco Act 2008. It is illegal to smoke within and 4 meters from the entrance to a tent venue.
RESPONSIBLE SERVICE OF ALCOHOL
The responsible service of alcohol is integral to providing an enjoyable, safe event for all patrons and staff. Liquor will not be supplied to disorderly or intoxicated patrons or to anyone who is under 18 years of age or who does not have the requisite ID.
The festival is a licensed area and you will need to show ID to purchase alcohol. Only the following forms of ID are acceptable:
- Valid Australian Drivers License (i.e. not expired)
- Government Issued Proof of Age Card
- International Drivers License (must contain a photograph)
Please note that the following measures are necessary as part of the compliance required by the festival under liquor licensing laws:
- No alcohol can be brought into the festival area or day carparks.
- The campground, RV World and Campers Carpark is also a No Alcohol area.
- All patrons are subject to bag searches. Your co-operation is appreciated. Please see the full list of banned items at splendourinthegrass.com
- Any banned items found during searches will be confiscated.
- The organiser reserves the right to refuse admission to any person who shows signs of being affected by alcohol or drugs.
- Alcohol cannot be brought onto or consumed on buses travelling to and from the festival.
Any minors found in possession of alcohol will be removed from the festival and will be subject to police action, as will those who procured the alcohol for them. As per Splendour’s Youth Policy, those aged 15 or under must be accompanied at all times by a parent or responsible adult.
Don’t forget to pace yourself, especially if you’re driving. There is a large variety of non-alcoholic beverages and food options available across the festival site.
Campfires are NOT permitted in the campground by agreement between the festival and fire authorities. Anyone lighting a fire will be ejected from the festival. This includes fireworks, flares or fire twirling. There will be supervised communal bonfires at a few locations throughout the campgrounds & event area (which also has mushroom heaters).
An appropriate Car Pass is required for all private vehicles entering and parking at North Byron Parklands. You will need to pre-purchase the appropriate car pass, and you can now pre-purchase a car pass up until midnight the day before the entry day of the car pass. So for example, to pre-purchase a Thursday Campers Carpark Pass or RV Parking you will need to do so before midnight on Wednesday 23 July. Purchase your Car Pass from moshtix here.
If you arrive without the appropriate pre-purchased car pass, the below penalty fees will apply:
- CAMPERS CARPARK PASS - $60 per vehicle payable upon entry
- RV PARKING PASS – NOT AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE UPON ENTRY
- DAY PARKING PASS - $60 per day per vehicle payable upon entry
Car Pass $30 redemption vouchers for car-pooling DO NOT apply to those who buy car passes upon entry.
Those of you who did the right thing and pre-purchased your car pass remember that you can qualify for a $30 REDEMPTION VOUCHER of your Car Pass if:
DAY PARKING PASS – there are4 or more ticketholders in your vehicle when you arrive in the carpark on the day that your Day Parking Pass is valid.
CAMPERS CARPARK PASS - 3 or more ticketholders in your vehicle when you arrive in the Campers Carpark.
Please place your CAR PASS on the driver’s side dashboard so our staff can see it as you enter the venue and proceed to the campground entry gates where it will be scanned. Please note Passbook cannot be used for CAR PASSES as we need to sight and scan a printed copy of your car pass on approach.

Please drive carefully on site and observe internal speed limits. On the highway, take regular breaks. Take care on local roads. Do not enter or leave the venue on foot. Those riding pushbikes should leave them in the bike parking area located in the northern carpark and proceed on foot to and from the festival entry.
RESPECT OUT NEIGHBOURS
Splendour provides a huge economic and cultural boost to the Byron and Tweed Shires, but as responsible members of this community we also need to mitigate the impacts of the event on the local area. Please show some consideration by following these tips:
- Respect the local community and environment.
- Do not enter or attempt to camp in the nearby nature reserve. Penalties apply.
- Do not camp in or around your vehicle on nearby roadsides, parking lots etc. Council rangers will be on the lookout for illegal camping or people sleeping in cars. Maximum penalty exceeds $1,000.
- Do NOT park on nearby roadsides. Fines apply for illegal parking.
- If walking in residential areas, please keep the noise down.
- Use your accommodation as a place to sleep, NOT to party. Your neighbours need to rest.
- Do not litter – use the bins provided or hold onto it until you find a bin.
- Please use public toilets. When travelling to and from the festival, plan ahead so you don’t get caught short.
- Avoid the centre of Byron Bay late at night – there isn’t much open, there is no public transport (other than festival buses) and taxis are in short supply.
- Please bring VALID photo ID that corresponds with the name and date of birth printed on your ticket as both must be presented for admission.
- Prepare to be searched upon entry (including bags and camping equipment). Unfortunately we need to do this and your co-operation is appreciated. Please see these lists of items banned in the campground and inside the event area.
- Campers remember you’re not able to park your car next to your tent Please follow the directions of our staff to the Campers Carpark area.
- NO tents allowed in RV WORLD. This area is for vehicles designed for sleeping in such as vans, campervans, caravans, camper trailers etc.
- Stage diving, crowd surfing and moshing are prohibited. Those attempting such activities risk being evicted.
- You are expected to wear your event wristband for the entire festival. This is your pass in and out of the festival. Any persons found not wearing a valid wristband will be evicted from the event.
- Patrons must not damage flora and fauna or enter any on-site bodies of water.
- BIN IT! Help keep your festival litter free. Do not drop cigarette butts on the ground.

Days out from the start of Australia’s favourite mid year musical sabbatical, overnight news broke that London Grammar are no longer able to make it to Australia for the 2014 event

“It’s with great sadness that we must announce the cancellation of our trip to Australia & Splendour in the Grass this week due to illness. This is an incredibly sad situation for us as our last visit was one of the most memorable of our careers, but we do not feel that we can currently deliver the level of performance that you all deserve from us. Our fans in Australia have been hugely supportive of our music since the very beginning, and it pains us to have to disappoint any of you. We are going to do everything we can to make sure we are back down under as soon as possible and will reschedule our Sydney & Melbourne shows and give you more details very shortly.”

This was going to be the second sold out Australian tour for the band this year, with their three headline shows in January 2014 selling out in just a few hours and culminating in a host of rave reviews.

City and Colour moves into headline position.

Splendour In The Grass has received news that Alex Trimble of Two Door Cinema Club is in hospital in the UK. As a result the band is no longer able to make the trip to Australia for their exclusive appearance at Splendour 2014. The band sent us this message to share with Splendour ticket holders…
“It is with a heavy heart that we are going to need to cancel our upcoming trip to Australia for Splendour in the Grass. Alex collapsed at Seattle airport on the way to London and has been hospitalised with a chronic stomach complaint. We are devastated to have to cancel this show that we were so looking forward to. We can only apologise and hope for your understanding at this time. Love TDCC x”
We have no further information about Alex’s health at this time but we send him and the band our best and wish him a speedy recovery!
In light of this news there will be some changes to the lineup as it means there is a gap in the playing times…

We are also thrilled to announce that City and Colour will move into the headline position on Saturday 26th July to close the Amphitheatre Stage.
Dallas Green began touring Australia as City and Colour less than four years ago, and in that time has seen an incredible rise in popularity; not only boasting sell-out rooms time and again, but building his audience by thousands with each visit. Starting with an impressive 10,000 sales on his first headline tour, then more than 20,000 on his return, his December 2013 national tour, in support of the album The Hurry and The Harm (Dine Alone/Cooking Vinyl) which debuted at #2 on the Australian charts, saw him perform for over 30,000 fans nationwide. In between visits to Australia, Dallas and his band, which includes Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather), Dante Schwebel (Spanish Gold, Dan Auerbach), Doug MacGregor (The Constantines) and Matt Kelly, have been performing to huge crowds at Coachella, Bonnaroo, Sasquatch and Lollapalooza.
On this tour, Dallas Green plays just one sideshow, a one-off solo performance at the prestigious Sydney Opera House which sold out in a matter of hours, and the only performance with the full band will be headlining Splendour In The Grass on Saturday night. Hey there happy campers!
Splendour 2014 is almost upon us. North Byron Parklands is looking pretty as a Polaroid picture, the stages and big tops are being erected and before you know it you’ll be here, pimping out your Splendour 2014 crib!
So before you start to pack your kit, please read through our handy info below to make your Splendour…splendid!
Please also read the information on the front and rear of your camping ticket. Be prepared!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CAMPERS
The Splendour campground at North Byron Parklands opens at 10am on Wednesday 23 July – please do not arrive before this time. And if you’re driving, you need to arrive on the day specified on your Campers Carpark Pass.
On Wednesday campers can arrive between 10am-12midnight and from Thursday between 7am-12midnight.
All campers must depart by 5pm Monday 28 July.
Don’t forget your camping ticket! It’s separate to your festival entry ticket and every camper must have one, as well as photo ID matching the name and date of birth printed on the ticket.
If you’re driving, make sure you have the appropriate Car Pass. Please car-pool if possible. Besides, if you arrive with 3 or more people holding valid un-scanned event and camping tickets you’ll get a $30 refund voucher against the cost of your Campers Carpark Pass. RV Parking Passes do not qualify for this refund.
Please place your Campers Carpark Pass (CCP) or RV Parking Pass (RVP) on the driver’s side dashboard so our staff can see it as you enter the venue and proceed to the designated parking areas where it will be scanned. Please note Passbook or electronic files cannot be used for CCP or RVP’s, as we need the “visual” of the PDF printout on approach.
Large camping setups are not permitted. No couches or other large items allowed!! Keep it light and you’ll be alright.
The campers carpark is located beside the campground . Please follow internal signage and the directions of staff to your parking spot. After parking, campers will need to walk their gear to the entry gates, so make sure you bring only what you need. Once you’re through the gates jump on one of our trailer rides or use the convenient wheelbarrows to get to your campsite.
For those bringing vans, campervans, caravans, camper-trailers, station wagons and other vehicles designed for sleeping in RV World is the place for you. This space is for vehicles that are designed for sleeping in. There will be no tents, only vehicles.
RV World and the campgrounds are directly next to each other, and you can walk between the two areas freely and at all hours. The campground is full of tents and no vehicles. All vehicles entering RV World will be thoroughly searched by our licensed security team, so check the website for banned items.
Arriving & Departing
Expect some delays when arriving and departing, as a lot of vehicles will be trying to get in and out of the campers carpark and RV World at the same time. Please be patient. We will all be working to get you in and out as safely and efficiently as possible.
On Monday, you’re welcome to stay and sleep in, eat, drink coffee, reminisce over your Insta feed…just don’t wait in your car. If you have an early flight or need to get to work, be prepared to be an early riser.
Vehicles Cannot Be Moved
Once parked, your vehicle cannot be moved again until you depart the festival. Those with vehicles in the campers carpark or RV World can come and go to their car as often as necessary to charge phones, store valuables or use the rear-view mirror for make-up application. If you leave the site in your car, security will assume you are going home and will remove your wristband, so catch a bus instead.
There will be a number of festival bus services operating between the festival and surrounding areas, including frequent shuttle services to Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay from Wednesday for campers staying on site. Check here for the latest info.
When you get to the show you’ll notice our ah-freakin-mazing new toilets and showers! Purpose built and recently completed the toilets are waterless and composting – so no butts, pads, make-up or plastics please and the showers are warm, however please consider others and keep the showers brief.
Food & Supplies
There will be a number of awesome food options available 24 hours a day in the campground from Wednesday through to Monday. If you need other supplies, please shop for them before you arrive or you can hit up the General Store within the festival area which will be stocked with ice, soft drinks, juice, chips, chocolate, water, bread, milk, bacon, eggs, breakfast cereal, toothpaste, shampoo, enviro-bags, condoms, tampons, clothes pegs, headache pills and more. We will also have Ice sales in the campgrounds every morning.
Patron Safety Hotline
There will be a Patron Safety Hotline that you can call regarding safety, medical or security matters. This number will be on display around the campground. First Aid services will also be available.
While at North Byron Parklands, please go to your closest Camp Marshall if you have any questions or concerns. For all waste and recycling questions please ask one of our friendly Green Chiefs.
We’re all pretty excited about our beautiful venue and it’s going to get better and better for years to come. In keeping with our long-term vision we have a bunch of environmental programs and procedures in place to minimise our environmental impact. To complement our enviro team’s hard work we would like you all to participate in ethical environmental practices during your festival experience. Here’s how you can help…
Most importantly, please do not litter under any circumstances. No, no, no! Separate your rubbish and recycling in the bags provided upon arrival and make use of our two-bin system (identical to your bins at home) and please take what you bring to the festival home with you again. Oh, and be sure to show our Green Chiefs and Green Team members some love as they move through the campground helping to keep our waste systems under control.
Camp Little-foot Print
This year we are encouraging festivalgoers to adopt and embrace a more sustainable approach to their festival experience. For those of you who seek to leave as little impact as possible, here’s your chance to prove it! Do's & Dont's
- NO ALCOHOL IN CAMPGROUND – vehicles, bags and camping equipment will be searched on arrival. The Organiser reserves the right to refuse a ticketholder admission to the campground or to evict that person from the campground if they are affected by alcohol or drugs, or act in contravention of any of the Camping Terms and Conditions.
- NO OPEN FIRES – Campfires are not permitted at North Byron Parklands; however there will be managed bonfires.
- NO LIQUID FUEL CONTAINERS PERMITTED. Gas fuelled cookers are OK.
- CAMPERS ONLY IN CAMPGROUND. No access without a camping ticket or wristband.
- ARRIVE TOGETHER TO CAMP TOGETHER - If you want to camp alongside friends you must arrive together. You cannot hold campsites for friends. NO EXCEPTIONS
- NO TENTS IN RV WORLD – only vehicles designed for sleeping in.
- AVOID GLASS – glass and camping aren’t a good mix.
- RESPECT OTHER CAMPERS -Any unruly behaviour will not be tolerated and may result in your removal from the site.
- LEAVE VALUABLES AT HOME or lock them in your car. Report any suspicious behaviour to your area marshal, security or police or call the Patron Safety Hotline. There are Lockerboxes on site that can be booked before you arrive - visit lockerbox.net.au for more info.
- NO ANIMALS OR PETS ALLOWED.
- NO DRUGS - Anyone found with illegal substances in their possession will be removed from the campground and will be the subject of police action.
- NO VANDALISM – Do not damage or tamper with any infrastructure, or damage flora and fauna or enter any on-site bodies of water. Anyone doing so will be removed from the campground.
- NO AGGRO - Patrons will be removed from the campground if they behave in a threatening or inappropriate manner towards other patrons or staff. If at any time you feel your safety or anyone else’s safety is threatened, contact the nearest security guard or camping marshal or call the Patron Safety Hotline.
- BIN IT!! - Put rubbish and recyclables in the correct bins. Don’t drop ciggie butts on the ground.
- USE THE LOOS – The environment doesn’t need your waste, but our composting toilets do!
- CAMPING OPTIONS - If you have your camping and event tickets but have left your planning to the last minute you can try these Splendour partners for camping options.

MOBILE PHONE COVERAGE UPDATE
We are very happy that Telstra has made the commendable decision to deploy 2 COWs for Splendour 2014. We understand that this will improve mobile services for Telstra customers both at Splendour and in the areas immediately surrounding North Byron Parklands for the duration of the event.
With regard to Telstra's permanent solution, North Byron Parklands is still in a trial phase and not in a position to invest in permanent infrastructure, but we look forward to working with Telstra on a mutually beneficial plan for the future.
Following this latest news, we are now pleased to say that all 3 main mobile carriers – Telstra, Optus and Vodafone – will have additional capacity at Splendour. Plus, our friends at Spotify are providing additional connectivity via free public wi-fi hotspots for internet around the festival site.
