GETTING GREEN AT SPLENDOUR 2015

Monday 29 June 2015

SPLENDOUR'S 2015 ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES

WE ARE ALL PART OF OUR ENVIRONMENT

It’s another splendid year and it’s time for another Splendour in our Environment… and Grass.  We are becoming more and more at home at North Byron Parklands and have developed a range of Environmental Programs to suit the characteristics of the site.   As we do each year, Splendour has committed to minimising our impact on the environment and encouraging responsible sustainable behaviour through its various environmental programs and procedures.

So, as you’re reveling through the green delights of this year’s event, keep in mind the spectacular environmental surrounds of Splendour and the lengths we go to, ensuring it’s as evergreen as always.

WE'RE GETTING OUR WASTE SORTED... ONSITE!

In news that will surely make you green with envy, we are building an onsite waste sorting facility with the aim to separate general waste or waste going to landfill and recyclable materials. We’ve been observing the great green practices of the Falls Festival events, and learning how we can improve on reducing our waste to landfill and increasing our recycling output.

Of course we couldn’t do this without you! To support our onsite sorting facility, we need your help, so we ask that you please consider the bin that you are placing your waste in to. There will be new clearly identifiable waste stations located throughout the event area, with signage over the top showing what goes where. It’s as simple as that!

YES SIR, YES SIR, TWO BAGS FULL

If you’re camping, you will be provided with general waste bags, recycling bags and information on our waste sorting system. There will be regular daily rubbish collections where we come to you and take your full bags away. There will also be drop points throughout the campgrounds where you can leave your bags for us to collect, and grab some more bags.

So please help us get waste sorted!

A GREENER FESTIVAL AWARD

a_greener_festival_award.png

Green nods all ‘round...Each year we work with the folks at the Greener Festival Awards to assess our environmental capacity.  In 2014 Splendour received a, ‘Highly Commendable’ from the coveted international Greener Festival Awards!  A Highly Commendable festival ‘signifies a well managed environmentally aware festival which has taken significant steps to reduce waste, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and engage with the audience’  - AGF, 2014.  We are tickled-green to be recognised for our efforts!

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT CAN BE A LITTLE 'ON THE NOSE'

Waste not, want not…  Each year we refine our waste program to better suit the site conditions and the needs of our lovable Splendourites. This year we’ve been working tirelessly at becoming one with waste and getting our minds IN the gutter, to design a waste program that focuses on sending as little waste to landfill as possible.  Aside from a treasure trove of office puns, we have also come up with some great waste initiatives like; an onsite waste sorting station, general waste, comingled recycling and an organic waste stream, and… if you’re camping keep your site clean by reducing, re-using and recycling for a chance to win VIP tickets to next year’s event!

THE MIRACLE MILE

Two green thumbs up! For the third year running Splendour is getting dirty for the sake of the future…  the future of the habitat at North Byron Parklands. In 2014, Splendourites planted a hefty 1,700 trees during the event!  We regenerated a formerly degraded patch of agricultural land to increase habitat and reduce fragmentation…  Nice work!

Now we can only grow up from here so this year we are tackling the ‘Miracle Mile’ and we can’t do it without you! There is a long strip of former pastureland, located in the campgrounds, that’s crying out for some bush regeneration so we are mobilising our troops and planting both Saturday and Sunday morning during Splendour!  If you’re camping, follow the signs and help us restore the ecological value of North Byron Parklands.

CAMP LITTLE FOOT(PRINT)

Come… join… us…  Camp Little Foot(print) is the place to be and is becoming the place of the future Splendour campgrounds, mwah ha ha. Camp little Foot(print) is for those of us that want to camp around positively enlightened peeps and embrace a leave no trace attitude.  We have a camping space, within the campgrounds, that is ideally located for our prestigious Little Foot(printer’s) – nothing but the best of course!  And… in keeping with Splendour’s ethos, those that camp in Camp Little Foot(print) will be in the draw to receive VIP tickets to next year’s event!  That’s right if you are the best example of a Camp Little Foot(printer) you and those in your campsite* will be rewarded with VIP tickets to Splendour in the Grass 2016.
* Up to a maximum of 4 x tickets

All you have to do to become a part of the campsite of the future is agree with our criteria for reducing environmental impact both locally and globally.  Campers are expected to ‘self assess’ and if suited, contact Splendour’s Environmental Manager (enviro@splendourinthegrass.com) to secure a spot in Camp Little Foot(print). For information about Camp Little Foot(print) or any of our environmental programs roll your peepers over the enviro tab on the website.

CARBON OFFSET... IF YOU CAN'T AVOID IT, OFFSET IT

You’ve all made Captain Planet proud!  In conjunction with Climate Friendly, Splendour undertakes the annual task of providing a Carbon Offset Option to our festival attendees.  Things are on the up, with the Carbon Offset Option uptake that is, so well done! The Environmental Department has a perpetual smile thanks to the increase in environmentally conscious Splendourites!

THE GREEN CHIEFS

It’s their fifth year on the job, so no more elementary mistakes for these guys! The Green Chiefs are back and busy sewing, as we speak, to provide you with a strong Environmental message and a laugh! Dressed in crazy attire of their own design, the Green Chiefs walk the campsite showing punters how to reduce waste and recycle – it is all about minimising the amount of waste sent to landfill! These guys walk the walk, dance the dance and talk the talk… They are all passionate Environmental Science students that are endeavoring upon a career to steer our world along a more sustainable trajectory!  What a team!  If you see them, flag them down for a chat, or photo, or advice about how best to minimise your environmental impact while attending Splendour in the Grass.

THE GREEN TEAM

Green team = Dream team. These guys have taken up the challenge of working at the front line of waste reduction.  If some wayward recycling should find its way to the ground, the Green Team collects this and sends it to a more sustainable home.  Help a pal out and make sure all of your recycling finds its way to the yellow-top bins.

THE ECO COPS

Not to be confused with the classic image of a highway patrolman chewing a toothpick whilst grooming a moustache and looking for rule breakers, our Eco Cops play a game of good cop, good cop! They’re fully armed with Environmental Science degrees, and tonnes of knowledge about how to look after our lovely event site in the best ‘Eco’ possible way. So if you want to stay on the right side of the [environmental] law, look to the Eco Cops for guidance. They are here to help, serve and protect the environment!

ECO FRIENDLY TOILETS & SHOWERS

After making their debut in 2014, we introduced the best seats in the house at the amphitheatre with our ground-breaking, eco friendly composting toilet blocks!

Our composting toilets, along with our gas heated, eco flow showers are featured throughout the Campgrounds and OutKast weren’t the only people on site who were ‘So fresh So clean’! last year. So if you’re camping in 2015, we’ve got you covered to be green & clean. Did someone say Florence and the Eco Washing Machine?

Following the news that Red Bull Music Academy stage headliner Jay Electronica has cancelled his Australian tour, the ever-consistent organisers at Red Bull Music Academy HQ have finally put our minds at ease delivering a worthy replacement in the form of prolific American hip hop musician Knxwledge. Hailing from Philly but now making waves on the LA beatscene, Knxwledge calls Stones Throw his home and has lent his production skills to the likes of hip hop dons Kendrick Lamar and Joey Badass in the past. Warning: expect fire.

SPLENDOUR ARTS 2015 & SPLENDOUR IN THE CRAFT

Wednesday 10 June 2015

SPLENDOUR ARTS 2015

Come July the fields of North Byron Parklands will become a canvas bursting with so much more than astonishing live musical performances.

Each year the Splendour Arts program provides some of the most unexpected, unforgettable and Instagram-breaking festival moments from some of the world’s most innovative and boundary-pushing contemporary artists.

From performance installations, handcrafted micro-universes, epic inflatable sculptures and of course Splendour’s much-loved Tent of Miracles – one of Splendour Arts’ magical moments is never far away, you just have to keep your eyes peeled and Snapchat open.

Splendour In The Grass is proud to unveil Splendour Arts 2015…

ANABAPTISTER
Bennett Miller
Live art installation

The 3rd iteration of an ongoing collaboration between Bennett Miller and Splendour in the Grass, ANABAPTISTER follows on from BARNRAISER (2013) and RUMSPRINGER (2014).

Expect once again to encounter a mysterious community of people living and working within the festival grounds, joined this year by a series of special guests giving one off performances in the barn. On the final day of the festival, members of this unique community will be asked to decide between reaffirming their commitments in a special ceremony, or leaving their community behind for good.

NICOLAS CAGE IN A CAGE
Hungry Castle
Inflatable Sculpture

Last year the Barcelona-based art collective Hungry Castle brought us the internet-breaking Lionel Richie’s Head and this year they present a giant inflatable sculpture of Nicolas Cage in a cage. You can face  off  with  Nicolas  Cage in a  cage. Yes.  You  can.  The  meme-inspired  cage  was  built  to  bounce. This is an artwork that reflects the internet and the internet’s effect on culture. Love him or hate him, you won’t break Nicolas Cage.

Based in Barcelona, Hungry Castle is an art group featuring Dave Glass and Kill Cooper.

YOU C*NT STOP THE MUSIC
Andy Forbes & James Dabrowski
Tent of Miracles, Performance

Splendour’s Tent of Miracles is back with a mash-up of teenage 50s, flower power 60s, 70s rock n disco, hideous 80s hits, and the best hangover relief 45s played on 33 with shock jock DJs, classic retro movie cut-ups and sociopathic media streaming your selfies on the big screen! Just don’t forget to use the hashtag #splendourmiracles

Music in our walk, music when we talk.
It's really something magic, to lose it would be tragic.
Can't you feel the sound movin' through the ground.
Music makes the world go around.
You c*n't stop the music.

POST DIGITAL RUINS
Tom Borgas
Outdoor installation/performance

In a world saturated with digital information, it seems obvious to consider that the limits of the virtual world might one-day rupture the excess data bursting out of the non-physical back into reality. The problem is, no one really gave thought to where and how this might happen.  But it has happened.  A team of experts from across the globe has been assembled to document, study and record the details of this curiously fluorescent, low-res tessellation. Samples need to be extracted and categorised. Data needs to be gathered and analysed, analogue material measured and processed.

TREASURE MOUNTAIN
Pip & Pop
Sculptural landscapes

Landscapes meticulously constructed from  sugar,  glitter,  sweets  and  assorted crafty  materials  draw  on  ideas  of  paradise  and  imagined  worlds  described  in folklore,  mythology  and  mappae-mundi.

Weaving together multiple cultural and local references, Treasure Mountain draws  the viewer into a tiny but optimistic world of blissful abundance and utopian dreams.

Tanya Schultz works as Pip & Pop to create immersive and hyper-coloured artworks  from  an  eclectic  range  of  materials  including  sugar,  glitter,  sweets, plastic flowers, crystals and every day craft materials. Tanya has exhibited her work throughout Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Germany and the UK and collaborated with many renowned companies including Romance Was Born, Hermes, and MT tape.

PROGRAM 1
Sam Songailo
Acrylic on Board

Sam Songailo is a painter and installation Artist. Working across a range of media, including installation, sound and video, his practice centres on exploring our ongoing categorisation and adaptation to the physical space around us.?His work often employs the heavy use of pattern and colour. Sam is the  recipient  of  numerous  grants  and  awards,  most  notably  the  South Australian  critics  circle,  Emerging  Artist  of  the  year  award  (2010)  and  the Adelaide  Fringe  festival  award  for  Best  Visual  Art (2012).  He has exhibited  at artist run and commercial galleries in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne.

Don't miss Sam’s large scale acrylic on board installations at Splendour 2015.

FLASH
Reko Rennie
Acrylic paint, paste up

For the third year a new work by a different artist will take over the iconic entrance tunnel to North Byron Parklands as its canvas. Each artist has responded to the previous artist’s work and remnants remain of all three commissions. The 2015 commission will consist of large-scale flash symbols along the entire tunnel with a mixture of colours and backgrounds. The work will integrate with the previous works to create pattern effects distinctive to the artist Reko Rennie - an interdisciplinary artist who explores his Aboriginal identity through contemporary mediums.

SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT

2014_sitg_outkast.jpg

Splendour in the Grass loves North Byron Parklands and we know you do too!

We’ve moved in, decorated, landscaped the grounds and held a few awesome housewarming parties.

Behind the scenes we’ve also worked hard to improve stuff like traffic management, camping and environmental management. We think you’ll agree that 2014 was smooth sailing.

An area that we are still working on is sound management. Last year some of the local residents experienced issues with bass noise from the event. North Byron Parkland’s noise limits are not currently consistent with other similar venues around the country so we want to fix that!

North Byron Parklands have just submitted a request to the NSW State Government to allow us to run our stage sound levels in accordance with all other NSW outdoor events. The changes applied for will mean a greater and clearer festival experience for you and happier neighbours!

Plus we’ve had loads of requests from local schools and community groups wanting to use the site for small events, but at the moment North Byron Parklands planning permission doesn’t allow this.

Included in their submission is also a request to host small-scale community events that will provide exciting opportunities for local groups to utlise this stunning patch of land with all of its world-class facilities.

For more information on all of the above you can read about it here.

Now this is where we need your help!

We appreciate your love and support!
