Justin Shoulder brings to life a sparkling creature with a skin formed from the refuse of a party lifestyle. He encourages festival goers to make offerings which the creature will weave into its skin over the duration of the festival. Here Shoulder will become a shapeshifting, travelling carnival: belching, whistling and honking, using costume and its transformative powers to tell the creature’s stories through live performance.
For Sydney-based creator Justin Shoulder, the natural universe is populated with Fantastic Creatures – self-devised vehicles for expressing his fears and desires. Often beginning their lives as drawings, Shoulder’s creatures are inspired by the universal lineage of mythical beings: serpents, dragons, chimeras, cucumber gods, vampires, and monkey demons. As a member of performance collective The Glitter Militia, Shoulder’s performance practice has been nurtured in nightclubs, warehouses and theatre and festival spaces.
